I'm not new to Tolkien or LotR, just here; I've been a member on Planet-Tolkien (before it died), TORC, A-U, the Fanatics Plaza, Council of Elrond, Hall of Fire, and probably a number of forums which died after the movie buzz dried up.

I know a lot about lore-related topics and own about half of HoME, but my main area is with JRRT's languages.

I am the Language Mod. at LotRPlaza, and understand the Elvish language(s) to the point where I can read them or attempt to construct prose or poetry in it... but it's hard to actually have "conversational" Elvish. It depends on what you mean when you say "speak Elvish". It can be studied, analyzed, etc., sort of like a dead language. The problem is that Tolkien changed his ideas so many times; he never intended to 'finish' the languages, but kept adjusting them according to changes in his personal lámatyávë; all there is to see really are 'snapshots' of different times in the chronology of his language-making. In addition to the internal evolution of the languages within Middle-earth, there are the (many) external changes that JRRT himself made to the languages. So, yes, I am interested in Tolkien's languages and know much about them, but not even Tolkien could 'speak' (i.e. orally compose sentences instantaneously and carry out a complex conversation) Elvish; he wrote things, and then spent months (and years) changing his translations in every detail. You might want to read Carl Hostetter's "Elvish as She is Spoke" for an essay on how possible it is to learn and speak the Eldarin languages.

If you mean Tryhael's thread title, that's in Neo-Quenya. There's a fairly recent Sindarin Mae govannen (thread title) around here somewhere though.
