I think Theoden is one of my favorite "supporting" characters. He is saved by Gandalf from a base existence, and showed his kindness with his intereactions with Merry. He then goes on to defend his people as best he knows how at Helm's Deep, and in the end finds a personal redemption in his death on the Pelenor Fields.
"I go now to my fathers. In whose mighty company, I shall not now feel ashamed". We should all be able to go to our reward, being able to say, we are without shame for our lives. It is to be envied.

I would, probably, choose it to be Bilbo, because without his strenght to give away the ring, and his courage to accept the offer og Gollum in the Hobbit, the ring would have been lost, and Sauron probably would've retrieved it. So, without Bilbo there would be no Fellowship of The Ring.

A small point oh chief Maiar, but the same could be said of Sauron and many others.

Hmm, good point, but since i like hobbits, and Bilbo was the one who found the ring and the first to give it away willingly..I still stick with what i said and like him :).

Also not to mention the fact that no man can kill him (trust Rohan to be fighting with women) And I love the fact that the Witch King brings fear into even Gandalf, for he knows ina duel he would surely be slaughtered.

Does Pippin count? Even though he's in the fellowship. I love him, he's... such a hobbit. And what he did in the Scouring of the Shire was great, he just rocks. (Don't I sound so eloquent there? But that's all I can think of to describe it, apart from saying 'kick-ass' which carries the same sentiment, but is way too American for me) and you can see how he's found his courage to stand up for things that matter. If he's too important to count as 'supporting', then I'd say Faramir. His situation with his father was tragic, and especially the way they picked up on it in the movies, was very moving. But he's also a strong man and a deep down good-guy. I'm obviously too soft to say something like the Witch King :P
I always tried to think which one of the 2 Hobbits - Merry or Pippin had the better time So both were at Dol Baran, so until then, they're both equal Now...first Pippin Rides quickly to MT, meets Denethor, Beregond and Bergil, becomes a Guard of the City, visits some cool places in MT, sees the siege begin, and runs around trying to kill some Orcs
Merry on the other hand... Rides to Dunharrow, is picked up by Eowyn and rides with her, meets the friendly Druedain, and then charges with the Rohirrim

I personally say Merry had the better time.
I wouldn't exactly say Merry had a better time, but he certainly had more of an impact. Without him stabbing the Witch-King with his blade of the Westernesse, then Eowen would not have defeated the Witch-King. His blade alone made the Witch-King vulnerable.
Pippin, on the other hand did save Gandalf, and killed a troll (no small feat), but in the end his was the lesser deed.
