For those of you who have read the History of Middle-Earth books, or parts of them, I was wondering what your favorite parts, stories, or sections of these were. Oh yes, and if you name a favorite part, please tell me why. If you have no idea why and you just liked it, tell me that...I may end up tying some of this to my research, and it would be helpful to have any extra information you can give me!

I personally liked the Peoples of Middle-earth most, not only pats of it, but the book as a whole, becuase it sheds much light into the life of the people in ME, and gives us a lot of interesting extra-information. I am not so interested in the earlier versions of the Sil, or of LOTR (which constitute most of the other books), even though they are also interesting. The problem is that the other books contain only earlier or later versions, that were never published (and so were perhaps not considred so important) but the Peoples of Middle-earth contains information that wasn't published because it didn't find its place in any of the books.
Thanks a bunch! I'll definitely keep that in mind. Hopefully some more people have read the History of Middle-Earth books and will be able to contribute to the thread. I've read a lot of the History of Middle-Earth books, but I've only just skimmed through the Peoples of Middle-Earth one. That's a good point about some of them being older or later versions of things. I hadn't thought of it that way!

yes, indeed. most of the books are versions of lotr or of the sil that were not used anymore though I personally also like the books of the lost tales as they are more about the voyages of the Numenoreans and stuff
I need an opinion as well. I have bookmarked in IE the link to buy "The complete history of Middle Earth", and I was wondering if it is worth the price of 75 dollars. I am very interested in Middle Earth, bbut do the books do it justice?

It is a rather hefty price-tag, Anduril, but if you are a serious lover of Tolkien's works, it's worth it, I think. HoME covers 12 volumes of the earliest Tolkien drafts and stories to his very latest thoughts and ideas about it.
But as TM points out, it's really about what you want to know or find out. If you want to find out some extra information or if you want to read how the story started and some of Tolkien's earliest drafts, or even both.

Thanks for the input Ungoliant, that's the kind of info I need. I could get the paperbacks, but as I am constantly re-reading books, and I feel that this book will be an important addition (at least to me) to my library, I always get hardcover. I've got the 50th Anniverary addition of LOTR, but that's not for reading.

Exactly right!!! I have another hardcover which I have read at least 10 times, but the 50th is a no touch. I'd also like to get an illustrated edition as well.

I have not read much in the series. But from what I've read, I loved the fall of Gondolin chapter in BoLT 2. It is so indepth were the Silmarillion edition is like ten pages.
