I guess that Gandalf and Aragorn are my favorites, they are the most heroic ones, in my opinion, but like I said, there are many extraordinary characters in these books...

My Favourite is the Balrog, then Sauron, Then Angmar and Mouth of Sauron in joint third place. I don't mind Gandalf but thats about it. The rest I either mildly like or tolerate.

I don't think I can choose a favourite. I love every character in LotR because they all make the books what they are.

On the other hand... Sauron!  He's a cool evil dude!

Could you define 'Cool'?

Also whilst your at it try explaining how Sauron was a 'Dude'.

leave him alone...hehe...it is only his opinion
anyway I think I like Beorn bet, dunno why, I just do
and a small correction there mos111
I already mentioned this in an earlier thread
the Witvch King is not Angmar
Angmar was the name for an area and it meant Land of Iron or Land of Oppression

TM - Like many others I will continue to call the WitchKing Angmar becuase its shorter and everyone knows what I mean anyway so it makes no difference.

ok, I understand why you would call the dark side of Gollum Gollum.
but why call the WK Angmar?
you have so many other ****les for him:
Black Captain, Captain of Despair, Dwimmerlaik, Lord of Morgul, Lord of the Nine Riders, Sorcerer, Witch-king of Angmar

When I said that Sauron was a 'cool evil dude' I was joking mos.
I like him because of what he achieved in ME, albeit for evil purposes. Also I find the evil people/things in Tolkien's books more interesting.

Agreed. The evil things stand out whilst the good things you remember but scarcely think aught of.

Such a hard choice. I guess if I have to choose it would be Gandalf.

I am probably going to sound a little strange but I like Tom Bombadil best. Go on I know that you are dying to say something!

I personally don't really like Tom Bombadil. I see him as a bit annoying, what with all his stipid songs.
Why is he your favourite Earwen?

I have to say that Treebeard is my favorite character from the LoTR books. Ooooooh that brings up another topic for a thread.

that's because in most books there are less evil characters than the good ones, for example, in LOTR,only Sauron is the really really bad guy,and on the other hand, there are many good guys, so sauron gets all the attention

I'd say Saruman as well, but as you said Sauron gets most of the attention

I have to say that I have several favourite characters and I probably could not pick! Here are my favourites:

Gollum: because he wasn't really evil and without him they would have failed.

Tom Bombadil: mostly because I think he is quite fun.

Gandalf: just because...

Treebeard: because a walking tree is about the coolest thing ever!

Ok so they are my favourite's but please don't make me choose *sob*

My personal favorite is Arwen. She is the epitome of love and sacrifice. Galadrial comes in next.

Of the males...Gimli. He's a kick-butt kinda dwarf.

ok,the topic IS called your fav char from LOTR books, but I think that Arwen can't compare to Luthien in that sense of sacrifice, love and courage

Luthien is from the Silmarillion. Though I do believe she is mentioned in LoTR, but not a character in the story.

I suppose Luthien fought harder for Beren, but I still feel that Arwen's sacrifice is no different in the end, as she gave up her eternal life, for the love of a mortal, just as Luthien did.

yes, when you look at it,they did the same thing and it was very courageous, but luthien did many other brave things for the love of Beren,I think we all know which so I won't write about them. That's why Luthien is,in my eyes,a stronger character than Arwen. You know, she was the first elf in history to do that, and arwen is a copycat;)

Arwen is a copycat, you know I can speedily fetch my sword!!!

I'm married does that make me a copycat too, because others have been married before me??...lol

Me too!! The real point is that it's very rare in modern literature to find woman with such strong character, and self sacrifice. Authors usually (and unfortunately) leave those traits to men, and the female characters are generally window dressing. There are some exceptions, but not many.

true, and that's one of the reasons why I respect Tolkien so much-he created less female characters than male, but those which he did are rememberable and very strong- Luthien,Melian,Galadriel,Aredhel,Arwen,Elwing..and so on...they are all very special- powerful, strong, brave, wise...and even though there are more males in his books, the females play  equally strong and important parts

Don't forget Aowen. Strong, beautiful, and not a woman I'd wnat to have mad at me...lol.

If Aowen had a flaw, I think it was vanity. It seems her life long ambition was to gain fame, and glory, which of course she deservedly earned, but it was almost her undoing. It was good to have her finally learn that there is more to life then dying bravely.

no...
what I was trying to say is the type mistake is probably Arwen-Aowen and not Eowyn-Aowen
the name Aowen does not exist in Tolkien's works

Yes, I meant Eowen, duh! Slip of the finger. Thanks for listening to how I say, instead of what.
