This is a light hearted, possibly misplaced (it's not about films or games though, so..) What are people's opinions of the various parodies of Tolkien's work? (The Soddit, Bored of the Rings, The Sellamillion, The Very Secret Diaries etc) As a fan, do you find them insulting? Mindless? Hilarious? Do you appreciate them because you are a fan of LoTR? Do you have one you like especially, or one you detest? I'm interested to know.
I find them funny and I am not angry people make fun of it. This shows that the work of Tolkien is really great. Nobody makes fun of unknown and pointless movies, because nobody is interested in them. BUt great movies are always made fun of. My favourite is however How the Lord of the Rings should have ended, it makes a lot of sense, and it is also very funny. Sorry that is my second best favourite. My favourite is the Southpark Lord of the Rings episode...see I even have Cartman as Gandalf.
Yeah, that rocks, hehe, I love the avatar ; ) I agree, and find them really funny, cause I can usually see where the writers are coming from slightly. I liked the French and Saunders Christmas spoof of the films ages ago. It was so funny, Dawn really looked like Frodo, and ... yes, it was hilarious. She was wearing ridiculous big blue goggle-eye glasses and obviously wooden fake feet, and all the other hobbits were kids. Bored of the Rings is a good book. the Soddit's different, it's not as crude, and actually gets really serious at the end, I didn't like it as much. V.S.Ds are really great as well.
oh, so these are books... well I only saw videos and spoofs... the most known is Lord of the Weed, but it is in german... well still I have nothing against them
I have nothing against them either, like TM said, spoofs and etc mean that LOTR is great. I've never read any of the books, but I've been dying to get them.
I have read the very secret diaries though... and just love them to death. Me and my friends are always saying stuff like, "still not king" "still the prettiest" "stupid ring." lol. They're brilliant.
I love the diaries too, especially where Legolas says he is hotter then Aragorn, or where Gimli is considered gay... Or was that Frodo and Sam that wa gay??? I don't remember...
Hehe, well... I think it's one of the hobbits', either Merry or Pippin, diary where he mentions seeing Aragorn taking a bath, and was that Gimli under the bubbles?
Frodo and Sam, yes. Everyone always mentioned how Sam would kill anyone who tried anything with Frodo. Gosh, I think almost everyone was gay...
yeah, I remember some parts were really funny I also like the how lotr should have ended movie instead of the journey they use eagles to fly into Mordor and to throw the ring in Mt Doom.
I thought it was awesome, I love spoofs like that. Just like the one MTV did for their awards show when FOTR was out. And the Gollum thing the year after that, and another one they did too...
Anyway, I loved them taunting Sauron, lol. Then at the end, "one of us could've died!" lol... bookmarked the video too
lol...yeah well the most logical movie from them I have seen is how star wars episode 4 should have ended all those who saw the movie know the Death Star had to wait until the moon where the rebel base was moved into firing range. But actually the Death Star could have destroyed the planet and then the moon, they would have killed Luke Skywalker, and Vader would 4 ever rule.
Ahhh...I think I'm lost again! Anyhow, I've never even heard of all of those Tolkien parodies. I suppose it all depends on how they make fun of everything...

Yes, it does, because the ones I've read are funny, but they don't feel like they're taking the mick out of tolkien in a vindictive or overly critical way, they generally make funny observances of certain things, which is a compliment in a way. I'd never thought about how the parodies meant that LoTR was great, but that's true as well! I've never seen any of the spoof movies actually, apart from programs on TV, how do I get hold of 'How LoTR should have ended' The Might/Galadvaliel?
Well, I've seen the Very Secret Diaries, and personally, I think it's very clever. The whole thing is just... weird, but I appreciate it because of that. Also, it occurs to me that some people might think it's funny, but bcause I'm a Tolkien fan, and because I know more things than people who aren't fans (duh...) I apreciate it because of that, like I can read more into it than others. I haven't read the Bored of the Rings yet, but my parents aid I'll have to wait for some odd reasn... hoping to read it soon!
Haven't read/seen any of that stuff, bar the occasional spoof video clip. Some of them are really good. No interest in reading those books though - that stuff bores me quickly.
I didn't know there were parodies written on Tokiens works but hey sound really funny. I am going to try to find them now. It sound like the sort of thing I would like. I wouldn't say it's insulting to me as a Tolkien fan at all though. It's just a laugh.
Yes, well, I have met people who take themselves so seriously about Tolkien that they find parodies stupid and insulting to 'the Master'. Though I think they must be very closed-minded, which is a pity.
I don't mind the goofy, and stupid parodies, but I did find some B grade pseudo-porn movie and Skinamax (Cinemax), call the Lord of the G-String, grossly insulting, and I'm glad Tolkien never lived to see such shameless **** parodizing his great work.

Lord of the G-String? wow...that shows a lot of creativity well...any good thing has parodies these days if the books hadn't been such a hit nobody would have cared about them, and nobody would have made parodies so I guess that all the parodies actually show how good the books and the movies were

Parody is one thing, disgusting disrespect is quite another, but then what should we expect from the porn industry.
