Interesting quotes

Following the line of Lord Iluvatars orders I have uncovered a couple of interesting quotes in the Silmarillion. Not much conversation can be given on them but they interest me if nothing else.

Feanor to Melkor in Valinor: "Get thee from my gate, thou jail-crow of Mandos!' And with that he shut the doors of his house in the face of the mightiest of all dwellers in Ea."

This certainly confirms the fact that Melkor was indeedd the greatest of all the Ainur.

Here is all i know of any happening to have arison in the very South (far south of Haradwaith and indeed the girdle of Arda) of middle-earth:

"Then slowly she wrought her webs: rope by rope from cleft to cleft, from jutting rock to pinnacle of stone, ever climbing upwards, crawling and clinging, until at last she reached the very summit of Hyarmentir, the highest mountain in that region of the world, far south  of great Taniquetil."
"Below them (Melkor and ungoliant looking from the mountain on Valinor) stood the woods of Orome, and westward shimmered the fields and pastures of Yavanna, gold beneath the tall whaet of the gods. But Melkor looked north, and saw afar the shining plain,m and the  domes of Valmar gleaming in the mingling of the lightsd of Telperion ans Laurelin."

The south of middle earth interests me due to its inactivity. Reading that you could see all of Valinor from the highest mountain in southern middle-earth surprissed me some what.

I have one quote that i think is most best in Sil. It is about Húrin and it shows bravery and power of men. "Last of all Húrin stood alone. Then he cast aside his shield, and wielded an axe two-handed; and it is sung that the axe smoked in the black blood of the troll-guard of Gothmog until it withered, and each time that he slew Húrin cried: 'Aurë entuluva! Day shall come again!' Seventy times he uttered that cry; but they took him at last alive.."Silm.

Seventy times...wow.

Yes interesting quotes there. Being able to see Valinor from Middle-earth seems quite unreal. Also there can't be any disputing that Melkor was mightiest of all Ainur in Ea by that quote -

Get thee from my gate, thou jail-crow of Mandos!' And with that he shut the doors of his house in the face of the mightiest of all dwellers in Ea."

Also refering to your quote Lord Tulkas I think it strange why Gothmog would need a troll guard.

Concerning your second quote, mouthofsauron111, it does not refer to a region in Middle-earth. The lair of Ungoliant and the mountain of Hyarmentir was located in Avathar, a region to the south of Valinor and on the continent of Aman. Aman is wholly separated from Middle-earth by Belegaer, the Great Sea.

I am afraid I have to crrect you there on both points Narguzir.

Firstly Aman is not wholly seperated from middle-earth in the first age. In fact you could walk from one to the other by means of the Helcaraxe in the far north. Melkor did this in fact when he escaped with Ungliant after the darkening of Valinor. This has been done by oters as well.

Ungoliant indeed fled to the south of middle-earth:

"But she disowned her master, desiring to be mistress of here own lust, taking all things to herself to feed here emptiness; and she fled to the south, escaping the assualts of the Valar and the huintersof Orome for their vigilance has ever beeento the north and the south was long unheeded."

This is saying that she dwelt in the north with here master, north middle-earth until she disowned him. She then fled to the south of middle-earth to escape the hunters of Orome who often cam to hunt the dark creaturews of middle-earthbut mostly in the north.

1) The continent of Aman is still a seperate landmass than that of Middle-earth. The Helcaraxe is a land-bridge made of shifting ice (ie: frozen water) and is not actual land, therefore they are still two seperate continents. Also, Melkor and Ungoliant weren't the only ones to cross from Aman into Middle-earth - Fingolfin, his host and the host of Finarfin also crossed the Helcaraxe.

2) I never said that Ungoliant did not flee to the southern regions of Middle-earth. I said that her initial lair and the mountain Hyarmentir, which are what are involved in the second quote you provided, are located in Avathar - southern Aman. If you need textual proof, here it is:

"Thus unseen he came at last to the dark region of Avathar. That narrow land lay south of the Bay of Eldamar, beneath the eastern feet of the Pelori, and its long and mournful shores stretched away into the south, lightless and unexplored. There, beneath the sheer walls of the mountains and the cold dark sea, the shadows were deepest and thickest in the world; and there in Avathar, secret and unknown, Ungoliant had made her abode." (The Silmarillion, Of The Darkening Of Valinor)

"Hyarmentir     The highest mountain in the regions south of Valinor." (The Silmarillion, Index)

I did mention it had been done by others as well.

I am sorry to say this, but ice is not land.
and I will give a very simple example:
that is why the Antarctis is considered a continent, as it is actually a land mass covered by many meters of ice.
On the other side, the Arctis is not considered land, nor island, nor anything of this kind because it is simply a huge ice block floating on the frozen Ocean.
So you cannot consider them one landmass.
As another example Asia and North America were also once long ago united with an ice bridge, but that didn't make them one continent at the time.

Anyway, the fact that Avathar was not in ME doesn't really depend on whether Aman and ME were united.

I am sorry if i gave the impression that Aman and Endor were one continent, but what i meant was that you could get from one to the other by going on foot. I never meant they were one landmass, becuase of the resons you give The Might.

Well, I think the matter about Endor and Aman, and about Hyarmentir being in the south of Aman and not the south of Endor has already been cleared, so I guess we can get back to presenting interesting quotes.

Personally I rather enjoy the first quote in this thread. I don't think the might of Melkor has ever been disputed since it is so clearly stated in the Silmarillion several times.

I like the quote because it shows what the greatest of the Eldar thinks of the greastest of the Valar.

....."jail-crow"... That's just funny.

I think that the kewlest (LOL) quote was (Sorry don't have a copy of Silmarillion with me) when Fingolifin died and it says that the orcs made no boast because of the greatness of Fingolifins last battle.

I think this is what you are looking for:

Thus died Fingolfin, High King of the Noldor, most proud and valiant of the Elven-kings of old. The Orcs made no boast of that duel at the gate; neither do the Elves sing of it, for their sorrow is too deep. -Silm

Ya, thats it. I just knew what I liked about it.

I don't remember any other time the orcs didn't brag about winning.
