Hey there.

I don't know what the bar here is for being a 'fanatic' or a 'beginner.' I've read LotR about ten times, and the Silmarillion about four times, and CoH only once so far. I know some about Tolkien, and I've read some of his letters. I still get confused about the geneologies. Is it Thingol>Luthien>Dior>Eärendil>Elrond? I forget. They're all imbred anyway.

I don't speak elvish or do roll-playing, but I am academically involved with linguistics and philology, so I have studied a bit of the theoretical aspects of Tolkien's languages out of curiosity (only stuff in his books and whatnot, not the living language that has developed among the fan-base, though I'm certain there are interesting phenomena to be observed therein).

So, I guess I know more than most, but I'm sure many people on here know more than I.

Hello ninjaaron. Thank you for joining. My mother's uncle was a Philologist, fluent in several languages, my grandmother taught linguistics in Berlin and was fluent in 7 languages.
I myself speak German, Dutch English and Hebrew.

Have you been to the Elvish Linguistic Fellowship site?
I am getting the Vinyar Tengwar, whenever Karl has a new Issue.

ninjaaron,
Welcome to the Tolkien Forums.
No matter what level "fanatic" you are you will find you can contribute here.
It is the kind of place where knowledge is valued and so is opinion.
I myself will benefit from your interests in the various languages.
And, I think, you will find many folks who have both more and less exposure to Tolkien's works ... some only have exposure to the films ... but there is room for everybody!
There are several ungoing trivia and mini - games ... and several threads which focus on what you have read.
The idea is sharing and playing and just plain enjoying Tolkien's worlds and works.
I am only a member here.
But if I can help in anyway just ask ... through private message, thread or post, or out chatbox.
Again... a great big WELCOME!
Bear an Elf-Friend

Welcome to Tolkien Forums nin. It sounds as though ArwenLegolas and Galin will be the best participants when it comes to topics of language lore. Hope you enjoy the discussions.

Interesting, almost the same as me! I speak German, Danish, English and Hebrew, though I must admit that my German and Danish have fallen off a bit lately. I'm a grad student in Bible and the Ancient Near East, so the languages relevant to that field are my real area of interest, but I don't 'speak' them per se, just reading mostly.

I don't know anything about the Elvish Linguistic Fellowship site. Maybe I should check it out?
