2nd Age

Which books talk about the 2nd age? I know unfinished tales, and in history of m-e it brings up the second age a lot, but is there any particular story or chapter in any book that is dedicated to the 2nd Age? I know all about the 1st (silm) and 3rd (LOTR, hobbit) but what about the second?

No, I don't think so really.
Although some fairly important events took place nobody really was there to tell the tale.
For exampl little is known of the primitively living Men and Druedain, some of whom joined Sauron when he made his comeback to Mordor.
Elves were doing quite well, at least up until Sauron showed up and started forging the Rings. And of this we do have some account from the survivors of the attack, but also not that much.
Hobbits were living secluded so it makes sense that only little is known of them in that time, most of this information being known by their ancestors and retold as stories in the Third Age.
And finally Dwarves liked isolating themselves from the rest of M-e and the only big thing taking place in Moria - the awakening of Durin's Bane was kept in memory by Dwarves but not told to others.
The only possible source for stories of the Second Age, stories which could maybe later be kept in the libraries of Minas Tirith and so reach Bilbo or Frodo (as a plausible way for them to be part of the writings of the Hobbits), was Numenor. Unfortunately all the stories ever planned remained incomplete and so we know little of the voyages of Vingilot or day to day life on the island. Some record was kept after the survivors came to M-e, but also just some few stories.

So you see, there was little possibility for Tolkien to really tell any great story of the Second Age in a separate book and those he could have told (as th tales of voyages to the far east, etc.) remained in an unfinished or unpublished stage either in the UT or HoMe.

EruIlluvatarEa, we have a timeline, in it you will find all kind of information of the events of the Second Age. Go check it out.

I don't think he wanted to know something about a timeline - I may of course be wrong there - I rather think he is just asking about a story set in the 2nd Age besides UT and HoMe.

Which I personally doubt exists.

The Might, mein Freund. He could glean a lot from events in the timeline. I was the one who got it here. I know what's in it. My friend did a great job putting it together for another site and allowed us to use it here. Have youbeen to that forum and taken a look what was on that Timeline?

Now, now, I'm not saying anything against the timeline, it is beautifully made and really has all dates in it, and I mean all. Like even "The new shadow" gets an entry, fully complete.

The thing is the question was about a story set in the SA and about all the events. Of course it is an interesting and informative read, but it isn't a real story... me thinks.

Well, I didn't mean it come over as a story, but one could look up the events in it and then go and piece it together from existing matereails in the HoME, the Sil and other writings. That gives me an Idea. Maybe I could make a challenge to those of us who are still active on this board. Pick an Age and construct a satory from the Timeline. It deosn't have to be the whole Age, part of it would be ok. "What say ye?" as Aragorn once charged the Dead.

Did you guys kow we were #1 on Tolkien Top 100? As I was voting for TO last night we were in first place and TO in second after the rest.

Sorry if that offended you in any way, I really appreciate the work and I admit that it could indeed help better understand the background of some stories for example.

Lady Arwen & The Might,
I am willing. What are the guidelines?
By the way, you have me looking in my wife's and mother's recipe books.
(I think I am going to be a little fatter before the recipe thread is done...)
But on with the 2nd Age...
Top 100 what...sites, Forums,blogs...rated by volume, quality, members, posts?
What is "TO" and where do I look to see the ratings?

Bear, I am looking forward to your cooking and essay contributions. Guidelines? Obviously NO Plageary aka copying from others works. It could be a real thing from the books or a madae up story straight from yor heart. AND if you guys are not too scared to share your snail mail addresses with me, whoever wins in each category, (fantasy or Canon and age) will get a real certificate with a gift. Buty that is up to you. You also should cite sources( Books, authors, chapters and editions/pages) So that I can verify if it is corpus.
So off you go!

I still have to find the place on this board where I can vote for the board.

Aye the only story I know of about the Second Age, apart from whats in the Silmarillion, is the one in Unfinished Tales about Numenor which is fairly long.
