Please help me out... I believe somewhere in one of Tolkien's books an object flies at Galdalf and he uses a spell to repel it. Have I been watching too much Harry Potter or is this a possibility??
Iperelli, well met. I do not recall Gandalf repelling an object with a spell. Though, there are others here that know the books better than I. In the movie the encounter between Gandalf, Legolas, Gimli and Aragorn is presented in just such a light, however, for dramatic purposes I'm sure. You wouldn't happen to have a specific passage in mind, would you?
Hmmm, I'm thinking hard about this one, but I can't remember any repelling going on...The closest he comes to HP in the books is in the battle with the Balrog. There he tries to enchant a door, but the balrog manages to break his spell if I recall correctly.
Here is some of the magic I remember Gandalf doing in the books (including The Hobbit):
Magic fireworks
Ability to set things on fire in various colours, also the fire seems to be of a magic sort with unsual properties. For instance the attack in the wolf glade in The Hobbit, the attack by the wolves south of Rivendell in LOTR and when Gandalf lights the fire in Caradhras.
Magic smoke rings
'Flash of lightening' - he smotes a few goblins in the misty mountains with 'lightning' from his staff.
Makes all the lights in the Great Goblins cave go out.
Can make himself appear greater and/or more threatening by partially revealing his hidden self.
*seems to have the strange ability to possibly disappear, perhaps due to the Ring of Power he has*
His word of command on the door in Moria which the balrog broke.
His battle with the Balrog
A beam of light from his staff when he rides from Minas Tirith to the Nazgul on the plains
There are probably several more instances of him using magic but these are only those I can think of at the moment.
