Thank you guys! Yes, mj is my preferred name, so feel free to use that. Mmmmm, what do you mean by ranking kingdom? I will have a little site lookie-see now... *smile* I got in to Tolkien through being given The Hobbit age six. Ive read that more times than I care to remember and LOTR twice. I also adore Roverandom. I got halfway through Silmarillion and Children of Hurin but gave up. It is not Tolkien really - just his son trying to "join the s****s".

Btw: The Silmarillion and The Children of Hurin are works of JRR Tolkien. All the words you see written on the page are from JRRs own hand. Its just Christopher Tolkien needed to put them in the right order, find the most up to date and accurate information in order to make them publishable works. If you want to find the original versions of these works, where Christopher got the information to put together, then The History of Middle-earth volume of twelve books contains many of the original forms of those works.
They can be difficult to read, certainly compared to LOTR and The Hobbit, but they are very good books. If you try and find out as much about the First Age from this website and others, then go back to the Silmarillion with an open mind, you may well enjoy it - its a masterpiece. If not you will be missing at an a major part of Tolkien's world
Well, there is some editorial invention with respect to the published Silmarillion (in the Fall of Doriath notably) that Christopher himself regrets. But I think I can basically say that the Silmarillion is essentially Tolkien, despite being a compilation of texts written at various times and culled from various traditions. The Children of Húrin contains very little manipulation of actual wording, as CJRT explains in the book (after the story proper). The only complete 'Silmarillion' Tolkien ever wrote is published in The Shaping of Middle-Earth -- the Qenta Noldorinwa of 1930 (it will contain earlier ideas of course, or lack later ones, as the Middle-earth in which Frodo Baggins lived had yet to be discovered, for example).
