I have just taken the long hard journey from the southern tip of africa to the lands of middle earth, may our paths cross and our journey continue from the lands of Eriador to the black gates of mordor and beyond.
Tarcil, Nice to see another person hooking up. Welcome!!! Where did you enter your interest in Tolkien. (books/ movie/ etc.) Can't wait to hear your thoughts on Middle Earth. Again, a warm welcome! Bear an Elf-Friend

There are not many Tolkien readers in SA but the lord of the rings films are quite popular. My interest in Tolkien's works began with the Lord of the rings films, then with his books, I now own quite a collection of Tolkien books and read nothing else but Tolkien, as in my veiw no writer can match Tolkiens creativity and imagination.
Firstly, welcome to the forums! Secondly, I find it somewhat strange that there are not so many members there as if I remember correctly it is after all the Professor's homeland. I also am happy to hear that you enjoy to read Tolkien, but my advice is to also read other stuff for a change. Tolkien is a great fantasy writer, but there are a lot of other great ones out there in other genres. But yeah, as you said, at least as far as fantasy is concerned I don't see anyone being able to match Tolkien.
Well he was born in south Africa, true, but he had British parents, moved to England when he was four and always considered himself English. But yeah, I would have thought it would be quite a popular area for Tolkien fans.

Yes, Tolkien can be addicting...have caught myself skipping sleep just to finish a chapter, er- a book, oops the whole damn trilogy...and have never regretted it. I enjoyed the movies too but for me the never have been near my fascination with Tolkien's books. I'm not so surprized about SA...people reading books has declined...our librarys in the USA are nowhere used as they once where. Which book do you like the best?

There are 11 national languages in SA with english having the least number of speakers even though most of our interactions take place in english and it is the medium of eductation i beleive most South africans do not have a high enough english literacy level to read tolkien that is probably why there are so few readers in my country and i have not seen a tolkien book translated into any of our other languages
My favourite would probably be the Silmarillion. Out of the History of Middle-earth series, of which I have only read parts here and there out of the various books, probably Morgoth's Ring so far.
Welcome Tarcil, I know both Dutch and English so I probably can understand Africaans. At least a little. I was also hooked on the films first and then gathered Tolkien's other works and also have a sizeable Tolkien Library

SA, that means you're headed toward winter. Here in New England, USA we've had enough winter for a couple years, but it's been a nice spring.
I'm still in the reread phase, I'm up to the 'Unfinished Tales'. But starting with 'tBoLT' I'll start again into the unread material. I have all the books, I just never got to them.
