I'm new here and hope this is the appropriate forum in which to post this topic. I read with great interest Yavanna's topic on Tolkien artists. I know many of those illustrators from collecting the many Tolkien calendars that have been created over the years. You can view my collection at:
www.angelfire.com/tn3/tolkiencalendars
Over the years, I have corresponded with Tim Kirk, Ted Nasmith, John Howe, Henning Janssen, and Anke Eissmann. They have all been great fun and supported my calendar-collecting quest. I do not collect the LotR calendars related to the PJ movies. In any case, I hope you enjoy and/or find my website of interest should you visit.

Wow...that really is a great page you have there If I ever have a problem concerning calendars I definitely know where to go to... Anyway, I live in Germany so if I find any interesting German ones, and not film-related, I'll definitely send them to you

Hello from The Green Hill Country -
Thanks very much for the compliment. I would be more than happy to hear from you should you have questions about the calendars. If I should not know the answer, I am certain that one of my fellow collectors would.
I very much appreciate your offer about these calendars. I'll give you a hint about my website: I use it not only to catalog the calendars but also to indicate which ones I have a copy of. Simply look at the year column. If the year is bold for example 1973, then I own one (or perhaps more than one). If the year is regular, for example 1969, then I'm looking for a copy of it. I would be more than grateful to hear from you (either here or via the email link on my website) if you should discover any from Germany (or France or Poland as those countries border you). If you check out the Germany section of the "Country/Society" listings, you will be able to note which ones I am looking for (now that you know the key!)
I will post at least once a month here as I update my website and/or the Calendar of the Month feature.

Thanks very much for your offer! I have only seen it (the 1991 Laurin issue) once on eBay over the many years that I have been collecting these. Being a commercial issue (a variant of and licensed by what was Allen&Unwin at the time, soon to be acquired by HarperCollins publishers), I don't believe it's that rare. It's just that no one has auctioned it on eBay. And thanks very much for your compliment. Stay tuned for further developments. I'm hot on the trail of a couple of rare ones now!

As noted in previous post, I was able to obtain a copy a rarity: the 1983 Antioch Publishing Not-Too-Big Calendars Fantasy calendar. The name is self-descriptive: it is only 5.75 inches square. It is the only calendar published in 1983 that had any Tolkien-related illustrations in it. Even then, only the July illustration ("Gandalf's Visit" by Sylvia Thomas) is so. It is very curious that not Ballantine Books nor Allen&Unwin (the two commercial publishers that had been issuing successful Tolkien calendars since 1973 and 1974, respectively) nor any of the various Tolkien societies did one that year. This one is an obscure issue; I have been waiting for years for one to appear. I had communicated with Antioch about it. Even they had no one that could help me with any information on it. Definitely a "10" in terms of rarity! Already have a listing for it on my website; will get a picture as soon as I receive it.

I added several calendars in February (find them under "What's New") and just posted the March Calendar of the Month. It is the first issue in a series that are personal favorites. Hope you enjoy it!
Spring is coming! I could feel it in the air here today.

Hey whaddaya know... The Calendar Gyde guy! I love your site - there's been a link to it on my site's links page for a couple of years now. I tried to contact you when it went up as a matter of netiquette, but didn't hear back and took no response as permission to leave the link... I hope that's alright.
A lot of the art is wonderful, but don't have the patience to work on a calendar collection, so I've stuck with just desk diaries. But if I ever change my mind and start in on calendars, I know where to find the catalog - hat's off to you, sir.
Hail and well met! I am pleased that we have met (finally, per your comments above) even if only virtually. If If I did not reply to an email, please do not take that as a snub. It was neither intentional nor my style.
I checked out your user profile and noted that you have created the skishmi website with the Tolkien boxsets on it. I had it bookmarked and have found it most useful. So keep up the good work. In the recent past (since December or so), I have picked up a few of the earliest Ballantine paperback boxsets on eBay so you will understand my interest in your site. If found it when doing some research on them before buying any. I was able to pick up an essentially mint (other than not being shrinkwrapped) set in the green box recently. It looks like it sat in someone's closet for the last 40 years. So I have the green, white, and red boxsets from Ballantine.
My interest in the early sets may be indicated by the avatar that you see in my postings. It is the Barbara Remington art the graced the covers of the early paperback sets. The photo is of a wall in my college dormitory that we painted in the fall of 1973 in tribute to The Professor when he passed away. I still the old dog-eared, worn, and paint splattered books from that time. I wouldn't trade them for their weight in gold (or mithril).
It is perfectly fine with me that you have a link to my site on yours (and I knew that it was there having checked out your links page previously). I could give you a link to a Polish website that did not even use a link to my site . . . they created a Polish version of my website (all of my information, pictures, etc) and didn't even tell me (much less ask me!) Actually, I didn't mind (imitation being the sincerest form of flattery and all that). I contacted the owner and struck up a very nice conversation.
Hoping that this finds you well,

In addition to the commercial publishers (e.g. - Ballantine and Allen&Unwin which are now under the HarperCollins banner), there are many Tolkien societies/associations that have published calendars for their membership. I have been fortunate to discover and collect some with as few as three copies. More importantly, members of these societies have been kind enough to write up histories of their groups for me. In an attempt to provide more content than the simple "cut and dried" information provided by each calendar entry, I have been adding their information to the appropriate sections/entries within my website. You can discover those entries in the "What's New" section of my website:
www.angelfire.com/tn3/tolkiencalendars
I am very pleased with the interest that the TF members have shown and love the posts. Should you know of any calendars that I have not catalogued, I would of course love to hear from you. It is my quest to make my gyde compleat! Thanks all.

It's the first of the month and that means that I have updated the Calendar of the Month feature on my website. April's calendar is a rarity and particular favorite. Recent updates may be found under "What's New on this Website?" You may view it all at:
Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement. For even the very wise can not see all ends.
Nice to see the collection grow Btw, are there many other collectors of Tolkien-related calendars in the world? I personally wouldn't actually think so.
The catalog grows when I am able to discover a new (previously undiscovered) one.
"My" collection grows when I am able to acquire a copy of one. Speaking of which, you don't have to worry about finding a 1991 Laurin calendar. I found one from an eBay seller in France, and they actually had the original sleeve (mailing envelope) for it. The seller did not state this in his auction and I did not ask. So, it was a VERY pleasant surprise when the package arrived and I discovered it!
Yes, I there are other calendar collectors out there, and we compete for them. I correspond with five of them (four in the US, one in The Netherlands) on a regular basis. We share our successes (information, how we found it, etc). And there are others that I have communicated with in the past but not regularly. At the risk of having pride go before a fall, no one has as many I do. There are many true rarities (simply because so few were produced - I refer you to such information on the website) and many de facto rarities (because they are now older issues or were distributed to society members, e.g. - the ShirePost, Middle-earth Fellowship, and Khandlendar issues). When it comes to finding (much less collecting) these, it is simply a matter of networking. My website gives me a decided advantage over the other collectors. I have had people contact via it which has led to various discoveries (and acquisitions) in the past.
Still, it is a rather small niche in the world of Tolkieniana. I know LotR book collectors that have most (if not all) of the editions that have come out since 1955 (or earlier if they collect The Hobbit. They have spent tens (if not hundreds) of thousands of dollars (euros, whatever!) on their collections. I have spent "enough" but no where near what they have. It is still possible to find even the early issues of the common calendars for a very reasonable price, and I have even been fortunate to find some rare ones for more than reasonable amounts.
And I have made the acquaintance of people all over the world. It is a lot of fun!

Well I must admit you have definitely impressed me and gained my total respect It's really something special to see the descriptions of some of the calendars and the small ammount they were produced in, and still the fact you own them... Definitely a collection any fan would love to have. Good job!
Thank you! What started out as a desire to find the one or two Ballantine calendars that I was missing turned into an obsession. I created the website as a means to both catalog all of the calendars and provide that information to my fellow collectors. And so, I have learned how to create a website, too.

No. You are analyzing the artwork in too much detail. When you see the error, you will wonder why you did not see it before and probably agree with me: It's not a surprise that it was not accepted as a TOLKIEN calendar cover. (Hint, hint!)

Yup. You would think that he would have noticed somewhere in the sketches that he must have done for this work that he had misspelled the good Professor's name! How could one take as much time as it must have taken to create this work and not notice that error? It reminds me of the Snickers commercial where the guy doing the end zone for the Kansas City Chiefs spelled it "Chefs". Makes me wonder if this item is genuine!
Thanks for playing along all.

Received the new Henning Janssen "Birthday Calendar" yesterday. You can view the illustrations (and order the calendar, if you wish)on his site. While issued this year, neither the cover nor the monthly pages apply to any particular year. So get one and track those birthdays and holidays that you need to every year!

Thanks very much for your post. I very much appreciate your support. That listing is for a Tolkien diary. Early on in my collecting, I did acquire a few Tolkien diaries. At one point, I even listed them on my website. But decided not collect any more of them and deleted those few entries from my website. However, I will pass that listing on to a fellow collector of the diaries.
I should be making a new entry today (as soon as I shoot the photo). It is the 2007 HenJ Birthday calendar. You can the illustrations here. While it has been issued this year, it is not truly a 2007 calendar. He set it up so that one may use it every year and enter birthdays, anniversaries, etc - all those recurring dates that one wishes to track. But the illustrations are nonetheless Tolkien themes. I'm not advertising for him, but anyone wants one, they may contact Henning via that link. Hope everyone enjoys it.

Ok, now I understand...I thought that you weren't collecting it, since was available in large numbers, but I still thought I'd mention it Btw, I took a look at some of the Spanish ones (since I'm learning Spanish at the time in school) and I found THIS and THIS and THIS These are the 1998, 2002 and 2003 Ediciones Minotauro Calendars. Now, from what I see, they are not available at the moment, but as stated on those pages, they will be available in 2, respectively 1 and again 2 weeks. I guess you can wait a while and see if you can get them.
EDIT: Since the whole site is Spanish, you might want to ask someone who speaks it better I notice you can buy them with a credit card (Visa or Mastercard) and get delivery to foreign countries as well.
Good luck with getting them! ~ TM
2nd EDIT: Just noticed you're missing another Spanish one, for the 50th aniversary, I found it HERE; it will also be available in one week.
Thanks VERY much for sending those links. I will monitor them for availabillity.

Hi, an update. I was thinking I might take a look at the Polish Calendars, and I have found one that is missing from your archives HERE However, thought I might mention it, since you have the 2002 and 2004 ones on your site.
Thanks again for acting as my European agent and advance scout. I will see if I can get a higher res picture of it and will certainly make an entry for it.

OK, there is now an entry for the 2003 Wydanicto Amber (Poland variant). That was the easy part. Now I have to find copies of all of the Polish commercial calendars. Any members TF members from Poland that could help? Thanks all!

Added a rarity to the Compleat Gyde to Tolkien Calendars today: the 2003 Tolkien's Ring calendar. Only three copies exist. A member (who created an illustration of Old Man Willow for it) was kind enough to part with it.

I simply thought that "Compleat Gyde" had a much more Tolkien-like feeling (he being a professor of the English language who specialized in Old [Anglo-Saxon] and Middle English) than "Complete Guide". It's supposed to be fun and I think that compleat gyde is more light-hearted and much less pompous than complete guide. Thanks for the question!
And yes, this most recent acquisition is really quite amazing. I have said it before and it bears repeating: I can not do what I do without the support of a good many other folks. But Tolkien fans are a kindly bunch. Need I say more?

I discovered a Polish website that appeared to have three Polish Tolkien Society calendars for sale. One I had catalogued but not collected, and the other two were new to me. Long story short, I contacted a colleague there who confirmed same, ordered them, and sent them to me. I added the two new ones (2003 Parmadili calendars) to my website today.
Thanks for looking in!

Just a question (you dont have have to answer if you dont want), but how much is the approximate value of your whole collection? It seems to me that it has to be quite a sum...

...But it was so that from Nienna he learned pity and patience.
Hmmm, I had not really thought about its value as I have spent so much time tracking down the many issues and trying to collect as many as I have. I have quite a few that are truly rare (either because of the number that were produced, or who produced them, or - most commonly - because of condition). Value is determined by an agreement between a buyer and a seller. At the height of the interest generated by the PJ LotR movies, calendar prices spiked as "everyone" was bidding on all things Tolkien. Yet even today, there is definitely an interest in the rarer issues. (Recently, a 1979 Hobbit calendar from Ballantine sold on eBay for US$126!) I'd have to say there are a handful of fellow calendar collectors who would love to find some of those that I have. Given that, I'd guesstimate its value over US$10,000 (although I paid a lot less in total for all of them). I have been fortunate to collect a lot of them "for a song" on eBay and a few good transactions through booksellers or private sellers.
When you think about it, though, this amount wouldn't even buy a true first edition of the books! This is another reason for collecting the calendars. One can find many of them in good condition at reasonable prices.
However, I'm not collecting as an investment. If I were in this to make money, I'd be on the seller side of eBay! I do it because it has been great fun, and I'm a bit OCD! (My wife would say a lot OCD!!)
Thanks for your post.

I thought that compleat gyde was meant as a joke. Somehow, I am not so sure about the availability of those Spanish calendars, it looks as if they are still not available...maybe soon though.
