A very noble cause Parmastahir, somewhat interesting to find out you're working on an own calendar... Will there be a German version of the calendar as well r only an English one?
Sorry, English only. This project only started two weeks ago and the calendar itself has not even been laid out. Ted Nasmith sent his artwork today and I received other works today and yesterday. My daughter and I are going to lay it out on Saturday and hope to get the first prints done by early December.

Re the NETS/HI Calendar: On Friday last, Ted Nasmith posted a CD with the last of the hi-res files of the illustrations that we need to complete the calendar. My daughter printed out a proof of it (with what illustrations were available) and brought it to our Thanksgiving get-together. We edited it and, with receipt of Ted's CD, will probably start printing and shipping it in early December. It is going to be a most excellent calendar: many excellent illustrations (27 including the cover), Shire Reckoning format, moon phases (including an interesting fact about same), important dates in ME. Order one (or several for Christmas presents for fellow Tolkien enthusiasts) at:
www.herenistarion.org
Thanks all for your support of this organization.
Also, I added several calendars to my collection this month including the 2008 calendars from Colin Williams. If possible, his new one is even better than his others. Find them all at:

Thank you all.

Posted the December Calendar of the Month yesterday. It is the third in the "Bilbo Baggins and the Fourteen" series by Colin Williams. See it at:
www.angelfire.com/tn3/tolkiencalendars
For those interested in the Heren Istarion calendar: We have yet to receive the CD with Ted Nasmith's illustrations. However, we should be able to proof and start printing it as soon as it is. Tomorrow will be 10 days since it was sent, so it should be in hand this week. You can order one at:

I received 60 copies of the Heren Istarion calendar from my daughter (who designed and printed them) on Friday and mailed out 58 on Monday. These sold very well and the support of HI is very much appreciated!
There are only two copies left. You can see the cover and one of the calendar pages at:

I am admittedly biased but this calendar turned out wonderfully!

Thank you for the compliment, but I can take little credit for the calendar (other than putting the idea to Anthony/Jessie at HI and conferring with my daughter on the layout). The wonderful artwork of Ted Nasmith, Jef Murray, and Catherine Sparsidis grace the pages of the calendar, and my daughter did all of the graphic design. It turned out better than even I could have hoped for. Two copies are still available and it looks like we will do another printing shortly. Here is the chance for one and all to own a Shire Reckoning calendar. Among the 260+ calendars that I have been able to catalog, I can list perhaps a dozen that have Shire (and/or Gondorian, etc) reckonings.

Well, if I could afford it I would buy it, but unfortunately my pocket money goes to other uses... I like the idea of the drawing corresponding to an event that took place in that month.
A question, any calendars for 2008 like the one made by Mr. Huber that you can recommend? Actually, if I think about it, I could make one like that myself...for me and friends.
Indeed, one not be an artist (I am certainly not!) to create a calendar. All you need is a software package and some illustrations. The problem with most of those that you could download on-line is that they are usually low resolution files. So when you print them, the image is pixelated. But you could probably find some of interest to you and with enough resolution to create one similar to Hr. Huber's and it would be fun, also. But don't try selling them (which would run you afoul of copyright laws. For the HI calendar, we have the pemission of the illustrators to use their artwork.)
Happy Holidays to all!

p.s. - And if anyone is undecided about ordering a 2008 HI calendar, decide soon. There are only two copies available and it looks like we will not print any more. We thought if we sold 100 that would be great. 88 of the 90 copies printed have been sold. Most importantly, the proceeds will keep Heren Istarion active for another year! Thank you to all who purchased one (or several!) and to the moderators of this forum for their de facto support by allowing me to post news of it here. As always, Tolkien people are the best!!!

I (finally) updated the Calendar of the Month feature for February on my website:
www.angelfire.com/tn3/tolkiencalendars
You can now find 13 illustrations with a common theme: the 1977 centerfold by the Bros Hildebrandt and 12 by Colin Williams. In order to do any more of such "theme" Calendar of the Month features, I am going to have to go through all of my calendars and compile a list of each illustration . . . no small task as I have collected about 240 of the 271 calendars that I have been able to catalog! Wish me luck!
Thanks all for visiting.

Added a new calendar to the catalog (and my collection): the Pocket (France) "Calendrier 2008 Collector." It has a single Tolkien-related illustration within: "The Fellowship of the Ring" by John Howe. It was a bonus for purchasing Pocket books at Christmas.

Discovered a new (previously unknown to me) Tolkien calendar: "Calendrier 2002 Tolkien". Issued in France (curiously, I think it is a Pocket issue as was the preceeding entry) and a unique format in my collection. Find it in the 2002 or French sections at:

posted 08-25-2008 10:52 PM -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hello all -
Have not posted since May or so. It seems a very long time and yet the summer seems to have passed very quickly.
Not much news on calendar collecting. Picked up a few over the summer. But as most serious collectors find (I suspect), the more one has, the harder it is to find items that one doesn't have.
Attended MythCon 39 at CCSU on 15 - 16 August. Ted Nasmith attended and very graciously signed all of Tolkien calendars (that I brought from my collection) that he had illustrated for me , and signed a copy of the new 2009 issue (that he was selling at his dealers' table). Also, four of the illustrators of the 1990 NOT Tolkien Calendar attended (not surprisingly, perhaps, as it was a MythSoc creation), and they signed my copy of it. And the meeting itself was very interesting and a great deal of fun.
Away from The Green Hill Country,

p.s. - Hoping to have it ready LONG before the New Year, we have started work on the 2009 HI calendar. Jef Murray has done up a wonderful cover for it, and I have enlisted the talents of two illustrators (one from Poland, the other from Australia). Keep an eye on the HI website or my calendar website for its announcement. With the support of the many that purchased it last year, HI not only got into the black (began running a positive balance of funds), they began offering free memberships to the Northeast Tolkien Society (it being no longer necessary to collect membership dues). We intend to continue with the Shire Reckoning format. Will keep you posted!

Great to hear from you again Parmastahir, and nice to see that things are going so well. I hope I'll be able to meet Mr. Nasmith someday, who knows...
And of course, good to hear about the HI. I didn't buy one for 2008 due to those shipment costs, but now that I have some extra cash I will really consider buying it for 2009. Is there any way one could get cheaper shipment costs to Germany or are the calendars always sent from the States?
I had ONE extra copy of the 2008 HI calendar and just sent it to Alex Lewis (yes, THE Alex Lewis, former Chair of the Tolkien Society, creator of the 1998 Khanlendar, author of "The Fall of Gondolin"). Ted Nasmith knows him and put him in contact with me about the Khandlendar. It has been a most interesting communication, to say the least. In any case, I sent him that last copy as he was intrigued by it (so how could I not offer to do so?) The reasons that I tell you this:
* Sorry but these are available only from the US. In fact, I am the one that mails them all out (from Vermont). My daughter does the graphic design and prints them. I work with her on the layout of the calendar and illustrations from the artists. * The air mail cost for the one that I just sent was US$7. It may be possible to send it for a little less (perhaps <US$2 less.) But that means surface mail which generally takes 6 weeks! The savings would hardly be worth the wait.
I was indeed fortunate to have met Ted in person. I communicated with him a lot at the end of 2007 as we produced the 2008 HI calendar for which he very generously allowed the use of many of his illustrations. It was a hoot discussing his works with him.

Hmm, sounds like a fair price for shipment. And considering how much a dolar is worth compared to a euro that's a cheaper price then what I usually pay on Ebay here for shipment.
Do post when it will be available, as I would like to purchase one. :)
I will indeed keep you informed about the 09 HI calendar. It will be posted on the HI website and ordering info will be there. Thanks for your interest and support of HI.

Nice to hear from you again! Thank you for correcting Corentin's name! I had spelled it incorrectly in the entry but correctly in the body of text (and I pride myself on my spelling, so I am disappointed that I made that error . . . but happy that you let me know of it.)
And I am VERY pleased that you discovered his illlustrations on the Tolkiendil website. I had not done so. I think that I will create a link in the entry for that calendar so others may see all of the monthly illustrations.

2009 Heren Istarion/Northeast Tolkien Society Calendar!
If interested, you can check out the 2009 Heren Istarion/Northeast Tolkien Society calendar at:
http://herenistarion.org
You can find a link to the calendar and ordering info in Main Menu (fourth item in the left-hand column.) Jef Murray has provided cover artwork and sketches. We have two new illustrators this year: Catherine (Kasiopea) Chmiel and Colin (Bungo) Williams. Kasiopea is a well-known illustrator from Poland. Bungo is an amateur (in name only!) from Australia.
I was so proud of the 2008 calendar that I was worried that the 2009 could not possibly live up to it . . . this in spite of the fact that I had lined up Kasia and Bungo as the illustrators (and love both of their works.) I need not have worried. I got a proof of it from my daughter last week and it looks GREAT! I am REALLY happy with it!!
Proceeds benefit HI/NETS. Last year's calendar was so popular that membership in HI/NETS is now free.

I will definitely take the calendar into consideration as a Christmas present for myself. :D
Unfortunately, now that I own a car taxes and even more gas prices are forcing me to a rather strict economical policy. :( So I do not know if I'll buy, though I hope so. It looks really cool and the artists really show a lot of talent there.
Congratulations on your car! Let me see, a car or this calendar?!? Hmmm . . . As much as I love the new calendar, I think your automobile will have a bigger effect on your life. Enjoy!

My daughter and I printed the 2009 Heren Istarion / Northeast Tolkien Society calendar last evening. I will be getting the order list from Jessie & Anthony very soon and posting them next week. So those that have ordered should see their calendars well before Christmas and the New Year.
I think it a wonderful creation (but I am biased in this matter!) Please consider ordering one (at http://herenistarion.org ) for your use during the year (or collection of Tolkienalia.) This may be your only chance to see some of Colin William's illustrations. He is an amateur (in name only!) and his work is not well-known.
Thank you!

Even those in Europe who ordered a copy should see them well before Christmas and the New Year. Thank you for your support of HI/NETS. Parm, I will certainly go and take a look. It is so hard to find anything Tolkien here in Houston. We had the Children of Hurin Calendar this year. Maybe I can find something on your site.

I'm not pushing the HI/NETS calendar. We sold out the 100 that we printed last year, and the result was a stronger (financially) HI/NETS. But I will say that a calendar is a gift that the recipient will use all year long and be reminded on a daily basis of you. And if you are having trouble finding something for the Tolkien fan on your list, it would certainly be unexpected. Nancy Martsch reviewed it in the December Beyond Bree and liked it a lot.
Merry Christmas to all!

A short note to inform those interested of three calendars that I just received and entered on my website. Two (A3 and A4 size) are the annual offerings from Colin Williams. The third is also from Mr. Williams. But it is his first attempt at both full-color illustrations and subjects from LotR. Previously, all illustrations were pen and ink and depicted scenes from "The Hobbit." Colin was generous enough to allow me to feature illustrations from his previous calendars in the 2009 HI/NETS calendar.

Thanks Parm, but $20 for a calendar is just not in my budget. We will be living on $598 a months after our $66 COLI. But if you know anybody who would like to give us a gift for our 19th Wedding anniversary in February, give'em my email. Hugs

I have not posted in a while. But I have been busy!
After talking about it for the longest time (almost a year and a half), I pushed my son to help me create my new website:
www.tolkiencalendars.com
He designed it when he was in college (fall of 2007.) I had registered the domain name before then. I found someone to host for it me, and got my son to map it to that server. He set up some templates, and I have been spending most of my free time over the last month transferring all of the content from the Angelfire site. I think it is now all there . . . and I have added some content. I am now creating pages with the monthly illustrations. I am using the photos that I shot for the many Calendar of the Month features. I have programmed four so far:
1969 Ken Rudolph
1986 Hobbit Presse
2002 Pocket
2003 Ronnie Sellers (postcard)
I have 23 more that I will create soon. You can access the monthly illustrations by clicking on the year/publisher (which is a green, underlined link for those entries.) Once I get all of those programmed, I will start creating new Calendar of the Month features. Those now appear on the homepage of the website. In this manner, I will someday get most (if not all) of the calendar illustrations documented.
The only thing I need him to add is a visit counter. Then Ill abandon the Angelfire site. Actually, I think Ill program a simple link that will take visitors to the new site.
Comments welcome!
