RIDDLES IN THE DARK III

RIDDLES IN THE DARK

Welcome members to the third edition of the "Riddles in the Dark" thread. The basic idea of the thread is a riddle-based trivia thread. And because it is very similar to trivia the rules are also the same: Just as in trivia we will have different topics. At the end of the time period, the thread will be closed and a new one opened, with a new topic.

Here's how it works:
1. You take a stab at the current riddle.
2. If your guess is correct, you get to post the next riddle.
3. If your guess is wrong, the riddle stands.
4. If you do not wish to post a riddle after a correct answer, you may yield the floor to whoever wants it.

Rules
*Riddles can be asked on any topic that has to do with the world of JRR Tolkien.
*Wait for the riddle asker to confirm your guess, even if you are sure it's right, before posting the next riddle.
*All forum rules apply.
*Any of the above rules broken will result in penalty which can be found in the FAQ.
*Have fun!
*Only if a new riddle is not introduced within two days after the previous was answered correctly can someone else post a new riddle.
*And a last rule, please keep the riddles clear and simple. Try to avoid any very old or complicated words as not all members have the same level in English. And also try to make sure that the words in the riddle only apply for one answer, as there are cases were certain things are valid for more then one place or character in Middle-earth.
*It would be nicer if the lines of the riddle would rhyme, but this is not compulsory.

This thing all things devours:
Birds, beasts, trees, flowers;
Gnaws iron, bites steel;
Grinds hard stones to meal;
Slays king, ruins town,
And beats high mountain down.

Good Luck!

Alive without breath,
As cold as death;
Never thirsty, ever drinking,
All in mail never clinking

I hope a challenge ..

Not even close. It's an animal (in case of course you take Nazgul as human)

let me see...
I'm kind of disappointed about the animal hint, since I would have wanted to solve it without help, but still...
I'll take a stab and say it is a snake

I will ask a new one:

I came to dwell in mountains deep,
There to hide but never to sleep,
For I brought a great treasure,
A gift with power beyond measure.

A sign on the sky
Made in ages past
To remind of the world
Evil will not last

Out of memory I believe you are refering to the Menelmarca (sp?). The Sickle of the Valar, made by Varda that signels Morgoth's downfall.

PS: I am not sure if the Sickle of the Valar represents the fall of Morgoth or the coming of the Last battle and the Day of Doom.

you are correct
it was made indeed by Varda as a warning to all Morgoth's servants
my only correction is that it is called Valacirca, not Menelmarca
there is however another constellation, Menelvagor (Orion), which had a different meaning, symbolising a guardian for Arda

Here is where I am getting confused:

Carnil and Luinil, Nénar and Lumbar, Alcarinquë and Elemmírë she wrought in that time, and many other of the ancient stars she gathered together and set as signs in the heavens of Arda: Wilwarin, Telumendil, Soronúmë, and Anarríma; and Menelmacar with his shining belt, that forebodes the Last Battle that shall be at the end of days. And high in the north as a challenge to Melkor she set the crown of seven mighty stars to swing, Valacirca, the Sickle of the Valar and sign of doom.
The Silmarillion

I thought the Sickle of the Valar was called Menelmacar, but its actually called Valacirca. Menelmacar forbodes the last Battle at the end of the world.

ok, since no one else wishes to post I'll go next

They sparkle red and sometimes green
A fire like I've never seen
They then explode in silver showers
Looking like a rain of flowers

It cannot be seen, cannot be felt,
Cannot be heard, cannot be smelt.
It lies behind stars and under hills,
And empty holes it fills.
It comes first and follows after,
Ends life, kills laughter.

I will ask another one:

(this is hard)

I block your way into the uttermost West,
I saved the Dark ones from the rest.
In the North I ever-lie,
Till the end of the Age when much will die.

You are correct.

The riddle was well made...problem is that the only things that block the way into the uttermost west might be the Pelori, Helcaraxe, or the Enchanted Isles...
And as Helcaraxe is the only to fit the other things as well, the answer was easy...

It belonged to a Horse-lord
Whose son was named Elf-friend
It was his friend and was his sword
In battle till the end

Nope...
I doubt I heard Aragorn being called horse-lord a lot...there was however another folk who did receive this name.

I will ask a new one to keep this going a bit longer...

Valiant I am,
But my name is not Sam,
Yet of the Nine am I,
And I do not Lie,
From the south did I come,
To see my job done,
In fair Rivendell,
Over plain and deep dell,
Past mountain and River,
Did I reach hither.

In ages past
In the middle of the world
It surrounded an important island
Or so it was told

I believe you are refering to the Great Lake surrounding the Isle of Almaren?
