Does ayone know of any pictures Tolkien made for his works? Or perhaps he had an artist make them according to his specs? I really want to know what Morgoth and Sauron looked like according to Tolkien...
Well, im reading Tolkiens biography, and at the end of the book there is the top part of the Gate of Moria, and it looks quite similiar to the one in the movie. Just comparing

indeed, all the drawings in the Hobbit and in LOTR were made by him, just like all the covers for the LOTR and the Hobbit books, and also the cover illustrations for UT, and for the Silmarillion though I am not sure if he did more, the drawings in the Hobbit aren't so bad in my opinion
The Pictures of J.R.R. Tolkien ~ 1978-9 George Allen & Unwin / Houghton Mifflin Co. ISBN 0395285232
drawings, paintings, and sketches used in the early Tolkien calendars. Oversize brown cloth covered hardback in slipcase, reprinted in the mid '80s, I think with pictoral hard cover.
The Tolkien Family Album ~ 1992 by John and Priscilla Tolkien, Harper Collins ISBN 0261102397
Photos of people and places and the occasional artifact, with accompanying text, documenting the life of the Tolkien family, Red hardcover with dust jacket
J.R.R. Tolkien, Artist and Illustrator ~ 1995 Anderson & Scull, ed., Harper Collins/HMCo ISBN 0261103229 / 039574816X
over 200 images, some never before published. Large hardcover with dust jacket, out of print now, but the UK edition still widely available new (remainders). I wish these two editors would slow the production down and let me catch up
The Father Christmas Letters -and- Letters From Father Christmas ~ several editions, 1976
This is art as much as it is anything else - letters written to the Tolkien Children from Father Christmas and at least a full page of art to accompany each. The Bodleian Library Store sells boxed xmas cards made from some of the images, last I checked. Mr. Bliss (1983) was a children's picture story book entirely author illustrated as well.
This thread was a bit threadbare still at last posting - thought it could use filling in somewhat. Tolkien's art isn't master work, but I think it's wonderful. Most of it is landscape, scenery, or ornamental; he didn't do many figures at all, and most of those either caricature or mythical (santa, dragons, trolls...). This is not one of his better works - Artist & Illustrator, page 182:
and in case this didn't load.... http://tolkien.skwishmi.com/imgs/more/sauron.jpg
His original Moria door has been reproduced very close to faithfully by a great many people, including me - I painted it on my bedroom door at age 19. I should do that again.. maybe the studio rather than the bedroom this time tho
