Art work

I guess someone has to be the first to post actual art work in this forum. Rather than posting pics, I'll just use a link to my Elfwood gallery (which I havent updated in years).

Elfwood Gallery

That is some nice art work there Celethil. How long does it take to create each individual picture?

I'm still amazed at how people can create things like that using a computer, the only things i make look as if a troll has sat on an orc.

So what program do you use? and is it just the mouse that you use or do you have one of those "pen and paper" things?

I havent touched a sketch pad in almost a year. All of my work is done with graphite on paper. Once I scan it in, the inking, color, and effects are done with Photoshop. I am still trying to get the hang of color. And shading.

I tried one of those pen things a few years ago and it sucked for me so I never tried it again. I am still learning tricks with Photoshop

I forgot to answer Glorfindel. Over time my skill has increased. When I did most of the work in that gallery originally it took a few days per piece. I can now do a replica of each piece in a few hours.

I hate to admit it really but most of the things i do with a stick of graphite (or pencil to some people) mostly looks worse than that which i do on my computer!

No matter what you think of your work, keep practicing. Your hand will get used to patterns and you will get better. I used to trace from comic books, then I bought some books on drawing the human figure. Recently I have been getting tips from other artists on the net.

Wow, those are really stunning Celethil! I love the one with the Faerie dragon and Spellweaver particularly. I can't do much with photoshop at the moment, so the stuff some people can do always amazes me, though I'm very slowly learning through constant tinkering around on there *g*
I love drawing people when I'm just in cafés or on the train, just like, quick 60 sec sketches. It's helped to work out how to draw clothes more realistically, it probably helps trying to do human figures, though I usually get odd-looked too, .

The high praise is greatly appreciated. I don't think nearly as highly about my stuff. I will however agree with you about Spellweaver. That is my favorite piece and I have forgotten how I did the effects. I can tell you that I play with the filters a lot and the options in the filters.

I'll do a character pic (or fav Tolkien char) for anyone who can recognize the inspiration for Spellweaver. Hint: You will find it in an old role-play rulebook.

wow, I am especially impressed by your attention to details
for example the inscription on Celethil's sword...

Holy ****, can you read that?

Sorry for a less than dignified 200th post. If I remember correctly, that should be a rather offensive Elvish curse. I checked, and it should be illegible to anyone who views or enlarges the image. Just making sure the gallery is child safe.

don't worry lord Celethil, I just saw runes, but I couldn't make out any offense
and also, I doubt you have anything to worry about as long as the offense is in Elvish
I doubt anyone would enlarge the image, try really hard to make out what the signs are, translate it, and then feel offended by it

But if they did I'd be amused...
Wow, I hadn't looked so closely, but it's cool you included that level of detail

and actually, I personally thing there were Elves with swords that had offensive inscriptions - either towards Easterlings, Orcs, Trolls, Balrogs, or Melkor

There are two other weapons in the gallery that have inscriptions in stylized print that can be read. Heh.

I'm not sure how many of you were familiar with Elfwood, but its one of my favorite places to surf for inspiration for new artwerk.

For all the Tolkien Fans out there, here are some of my favs.

Anke Katrin Eissmann

Peter Price

Hope Hoover

There are several Elfwood tours within these galleries, rather than post the links, I leave it to you all to surf where you will.

Amazing artwork Celethil, indeed something to delight the eyes. May I know the secret ingredient of the drawings or it's meant to stay secret?
You have the skill to catch even the smallest feature of a character and render it in detail. Your characters are very expressive and almost alive. The lines are so dynamic I could almost see them moving.

Hope Hoover did some sketches that simply cut my breathing.

*bumps* you might want to review your collection and add some news, this thread deserves attention for being able to keep my interest.

Your praise is appreciated, if not excessive. Thank you. I do pride myself on the use of fine lines, but wish I had a tenth of Hope Hoover's skill; especially with shading.

There is no real secret to how it is done. I began by tracing comic books when I was much much younger (pre-teen). That trained my hand somewhat, and then I bought a book on how to draw the human figure (author: Jack Hamm), from there I diverted from human figures to an amalgam of comic art and sketching.

So I guess the recipe is something like:

2 tablespoons tracing
1 cup learning from book on figure drawing
1 1/2 tablespoons graphite
5 tablespoons of quality paper
3 cups intuition
A dash of inspiration

Stir in a slightly imaginative mind for several years then simmer in a pan lined with angst for another few years

Sprinkle lightly with photoshop and VOILA! Scan if possible and upload to desired result.

As for my gender you would be correct to assume male. Thats the second time it has been questioned. Perhaps it is my writing style. I really thought the pictures would have cleared that up.

Oops, embarrassing moment. I guess my edit came too late. I saw just a few minutes ago the pictures, such a pity I didn't check the thread from top to bottom, it wouldn't have got here. But now that it did, I did assume you're male even tough indeed the style shows you've been in touch with your feminine side and I don't mean it in a way it would make you feel embarrassed, really I don't. I consider this type of men the only capable of being sensitive and worthy of making your friend specially here on a forum where using the appropriate words is essential.
Obviously you work a little to get to this level and your skills are likely to become competitive with Hoover's since I heard you wish to match her, and I'm not saying just to flatter. You're not far from achieving perfection and with shading I'm positive you'll get it before you realize. Accept some fool's apologizes if this message is not completely in agreement with your standards.
*wisenods* never in my life have I heard of such recipe but it looks to me to be far away from failing you to express yourself in best way possible. Keep up the good work and may Elbereth be the muse of your inspiration oh great master of shading.

LoL Yes, your edit came a wee bit late.

It's not that I am attuned to my feminine side, so much as in my line of work skilled use of words is a necessity.

Interestingly, my latest muse has been the Tolkien Forums. I recently picked up the pencil and put it to paper in an effort to create my own version of Feanor and several of his sons. I particularly wish to render his harshest three children; Celegorm, Curufin, and Caranthir.

I'm also thinking about drawing Aule. When I get around to buying a new scanner, I will upload.

I like this kind of art because it has everything to do with the skill of the artist, unlike our modern art studies in school.
btw, look this is Eru from my modern art poin of view: ?

Studying Art has very little to do with creating it. Ultimately you know what you like and appreciate. Classes will have little effect upon the essence that is you.

Btw Are there any other artists with a scanner in the TF? Please show yourselves.

I don't curently have a scaner, but I might be geting one around christmas or so. My artwork, however, is not on the internet. I do my art with a pencil and paper.

Celethil - I have a hard time trying to be creative enough. I alwas feel that even if I did have a scaner that people would tell me its copying from what I've seen already or something. My first art teacher stressed on trying to draw a picture exactly like I saw it in a photo. Then when I master that to be creative. It has truely left a mark on my capabilitys to draw from scrach from what I imagine it would be.

However, I am about to start working on a Tolkien drawling of either the fall of Gondolin or Huan fighting Sauron in wolf form. When I get a scaner and you guys can tell me what you think I can do to better my work.

Gothmog - You are creative, you just dont know it yet. If you look in my gallery, everything you find there is modified from something I saw somewhere.

The point is that being creative is often drawing WHAT you see, just not WHEN you see it. Mix and match, modify, personalize. Take what you see now and add details from something you saw yesterday.

If you can render a photo on paper you are creative.

I'm an artist with a scanner, I'll get round to putting up some pics at some point... there are some on my photobucket, I can show those later.
Gothmog- Can't wait to see what you do, Celethil said some really good things

Lord Yavanna - I'm pretty sure that Celethil hasn't seen any of my pic's. I don't have a scanner so their not online anywere, and I don't personaly know him so I'm pretty sure he hasn't seen mine yet.

I'm actually can't really be clasified as a artist since I'm still learning the basics. In the past I've only drawn animals. Now I'm gonna start on creatures and characters of Middle-earth. I'm starting slow and still learning. So even when I get a scanner its gonna be some time before you see something of mine online.

I haven't seen Gothmog's artwerk, but I know what it's like to be unsure of my ability. I'm still my worst critic.

btw Gothmog, drawing animals is harder than drawing human figures, at least for me it is.

Really Celethil. I found it much harder to do humans than animals.

Right now I'm working on details on the face (noses, eyes, mouths, ears, ect.). Then I plan on doing some sketches of biseps, clothing, weapons (I'm already pretty good with the weapons) and other details. When I'm done with the these basic things I plan on doing single pictures with one character or creature. Then I'll work on popular fights from Sil. or LoTR. Somewere in that time, I'll get a scanner and start showing some of my work.

Haha, yes, I'm a Lady...
Bauglir (Dang, I meant Gothmog, it's your flipping avatars :P )- I meant Celethil said some good things to you, not about your work. I always look forward to seeing other people's stuff. I don't think I count as an artist by your definition either, but you sound like you're into what you're doing

I'm sorry, was that directed to me?

If it is then, Yes I'm very interested in what I do. I havn't been doing much in the past few months; but in the past week or so, I've been doing much more. I figure I'll be doing sketches of what I want in about a month or so. In the time in between now and then, I'll just be studying the details of things. Also, I'm pretty sure I'll be geting a scanner (probably an old one) around Christmas or early January. Then yall can tell me what to do different.
