Blessing Of the Powers

Just so you know, there is a way of upgrading your rank without having to rely on posts! If you provide services to Tolkien Forums, you may have chance of reward, just like you can be downranked for inappropriate behaviour. Visit HERE to see more.

Yes, I think that is a good option for the moment becuase people want to upgrade rank and as the site has no really high ranking members it could be done quicker. Also the site needs more members so everyone benifits!

I think this is not a good idea.
why?
high ranks are obtained in time, and with work.
I think that other voluntary work should be done out of good will, not only out of the idea to get a higher rank than others.
and in the end, what is a high rank?
does it bring respect?
yes, maybe in some cases.
but in the end, it is the member you respect, not his rank.
I know many high ranking members on other forums that get little respect.

I think its a good idear, at least for the moment. Until we have about 100 members or so. Although I agree with TM on quality of posts = higher rank, I think for now in order to get some members in we need a system like this.

oh yes, good point there glorfindel.
that is a good idea
quality of posts = higher rank and not number of posts = higher rank
unfortunately I think this is how activeboard systems work...
maybe some extra bonusses for quality of posts

Well as far as I can tell its number of posts = upgraded rank,

Quality of posts overtime = special ranks.

I do think however for the time being if you can provide TF with members you should recive reward.

I am going to be short and clear about this.

I think Celethil deserves to receive a blessing from the powers, and perhaps a Special Rank as well.
Why?
He did a lot for the site, and by this I especially mean the new forum he created, thus showing much devotion to the TF.
Of course, it is not my decision, but I hope that The One will take my proposal into consideration and repay Celethil.

Thank you for the suggestion, it is very kind of you.

The offer was made and though Aule is dear to my heart, in keeping with the spirit of fire, the Noldo spurned the gift of the Powers. 2800 posts from now my task will be done.

I am not concerned in the least. You will find the will and determination of the Noldo are formidable.

to throw in my two cents, i agree that quality posts is the best way to get higher ranks, but i will also add that someone who is willing to take the time and post alot, as long as it is not stuff like, hi thanks bye, that should be rewarded as well.

So being New to this forum, what could I do for the site to earn some rank? I am willing to spend One Hour in Service for 5 days a week. What would you like me to do?

I'd add that it's hard to obtain a ranking here if no one else posts.

I agree with you about the postings.  I have to admit that the time I spend in the Forums I spend reading not posting.  But this stuff is so interesting...I am willing to move slowly because, for example the posting from Arwen Legolas and The Might, leads back into Tolkien's actual work.  I have decided to order a new Silmarillion because my searching the references has led to pages falling out.
I'm responding to this because I want to present the idea that these forums are a mentoring instrument not just for the forums but for the works of Tolkien himself.
But your opinion has convinced me that I want to be part of the discussions - not participating or posting is much like the Ents just after the moot, or the hobbits of the Shire ignoring the outside world.
Beorn was suspicious of the dwarves and went out to see for himself the truth of their tales.  I guess Bear's are like that too.
But I am listening....very closely....and I suspect that others are too!  I will certainly try to be more active posting.

Nice to seeyou Bear. I hope you enjoy the Forums. It's been over a year since I joined TFs. I left off for a little while and I will not be as active since I just started school, only for a month, but I will have to buckle down. I am taking a welding class.

To me, and I guess that is at least, this forum is not about rank. If I want rank I will go spam post at one of the hundreds of other forums available. This forum is quality to me and the LAST thing that I am after is points. I expect density of thought and projection. There are too many excellent intellectuals as members here to be concerned with ranking. Which rooster has the biggest crow doesn't matter. Which rooster I can learn the most from does. Tolkien Forums is about sharing a passion of the Master's works (and I do mean works-plural) and spreading the exceptionalism of being a fan of his. Not about what great people we are but about what a great person he was. Amen.

Well said, Lomoduin of Rohansmile.gif

But ranks are a nice little side-thought to see who's a forum regular and who's not etc. And you get the proper avatar associated with your rank at higher levels, I think.

I like my little special avatar, but it did take some time and I have contributed and done things for the Forum, but not because I HAD to. I did it because I wanted to help the Forum and increase its membership. Most of the things I did were behind the scenes, like putting our forum into web browsers and Search engines. I think we got a better rating. I wanted to share our love of Tolkien with others and get more members. The Timelines that are here are thanks to yours truly as well, made by friends of mine who said I could post them in this Forum. I am just a person who wants to help, and I would do it even if I didn't have rank.

Take Bear for instance, he is so nice, I remember when he send me a PM saying he appreciated me because I was trying to help new poeple and make them feel welcome. Things like that are what makes this Forum precious to me, NOT RANK.

It's been 3 and a half years since anybody posted in this thread. But guess what? I am going to nominate 3 of our members to be promoted for Special Rank. All have been avid readers and posters, and show much knowledge. Since so many have dropped out like our dear Iomoduin, and have not been back for some time, I am going to send a PM to "The One" and make a recommendation. I hope that the ones who are going to be recommended will not turn down the offer when extended to them. It will be published who they are once they have agreed to accept the new Rank, so they will not feel pressured into accepting the Honor.
