Other Literary Influences

I know very well that this site is dedicated to JRRT's works. But, some of you may have seen on FB this post:

The Rules: List 10 books you've been moved or inspired by. Don't think too hard; what comes to mind first? Tag me and 9 others you think would be interested in the post and want to play along.

Since we're all relative literate people here, I thought it might be fun to see people's thoughts on books they love or have been influenced by.

If the moderators think this is totally inappropriate I understand.

What do people think?

Maybe 5 instead of 10 and just list the books you like to read.
1. Tolkien's works of course. I admire Orlando Bloom for his comeback ability. Did you know that he fell out of a fifth story window shortly after he graduated from Actor's Guild, and was told all he ever would play is a quadriplegic? And then seeing him as Legolas run and skate and fight and that was such an inspiration to me, and it was that that inspired me to study Tolkien.

2. Anne MacCaffrey and all her works. People who win against all odds.

3.Roger Zelazney, the Amber Chronicles. I love the way he paints pictures with his words.

4. Elizabeth Moon, a Female Marin turning writer and I love the fighting scenes. She really knows HOW to fight

5. Katherine Kurtz' Camber of Culdi and Derinyi books, and the King Kelson Series, I love the History! I still can see the conflict because of 1 Race being singled out, the Derinyi, and as a Jew, I know how it feels to be singled out

Ok. Here's my list of books I've read over and over; and I guess because of that have had some sort of influence in/on my life:

(in no particular order)

1. LOTR stuff biggrin

2. Little Women

3. Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry

4. Lamb by Christopher Moore

5. Narnia Books (mostly The Horse and His Boy and The Magician's Nephew)

Friends,
I am not so sure about this topic ...
Seems a pretty large step from Tolkien ...

but I'll play if you will be patient ...

I re-read all of Tolkien's works about once a year ... sometimes more.

Here is a list of others that I read and re-read ...

Robert Heinlein:

  • Sixth Column
  • Stranger in a Strange Land,
  • The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress
  • The Past Through Tomorrow
  • Time Enough for Love

James Clavell:

  • Shogun

King Solomon

  • The Book of Proverbs

Gary Gyjax & Dave Arneson:

  • Dungeon and Dragons ~ Dungeon Masters Guide

C.G. Jung:

  • Answer to Job
  • Man and His Symbols
  • The Red Book

I hope this what you meant.

Hi, folks,

1. All Things Tolkien,

COH, LOTR, Sil, Hobbit, The Letters, Hobbit, Lays of Beleriand, Unfinished Tales, Lost tales 2, Tolkien Reader, shaping of Middle Earth, Atlas of Middle Earth. (own all of these except the Sil...thank you Lady Arwen and friend Bear)

2. Raymond E. Feist

I've read at least 14 of his titles (I own 3) Everything in the world Midkemmia created by this author inspired me through my younger years before I was actually turned on to Tolkien which didn't happen until I was 27 years old.  Late bloomer....

3. Micheal Moorcock

The Elric of Melibone series (I own 7)

4. Chuck D. Yager

The chronicles of Valtyr (own it) A preamble and a (D&D type) manual to help to create characters and play in a world of this particular author's design, named Valtyr.  Let you in on a little secret...the author is actually a long time buddy of mine...shameless promotion.  sorry...couldn't help it.

5. Good Housekeeping.....

6. Norton Juster

The Phantom Tollbooth.  This was the very first novel I ever read.  The first book which inspired me to write....I think I was 11 or 12....

Bear, Gigax is awesome and me and my buds including the Author of #4 (who was our appointed DM) played D&D until the sun came up and the wheels fell off.....good times..indeed.....
