A Traveler's Tale

(OOC: So, yeah, I wanted to write something, and I deceided to make a little story. I suck at begginings, so suffer through it and await later entries)

The man slid into the tavern of Bree, not wanting to draw much attention. He sat down, wearing simple traveling clothes under a cloak. He ordered an ale from the barkeep, who the traveler noticed had a face that was fairly fat and extrodinarily red, but made no comment. Instead, he sipped his ale in silence, savoring the flavor of the beverage and watching the paritioners. This man's right name was Tobrecan, and he hailed from the land of Rohan. He had taken to adventuring, and enjoyed it very much so. However, there was one other profession that interested him. That was that of the healer, as the travelers main drive was to help others. Tobrecan's eyes settled on one man who was glaring at him, albeit with the look of spirits flowing through his system. As their eyes met, he stood, wobbled and strode over. Granted, this man could hardly have walked the few feet to his house if he had a mind to.

"A stranger eh? Not one of them Ranger's are you?"

His speech was drukenly slurred, and by luck The traveler managed to discern the meaning behind the words. "If I was indeed a Ranger, I doubt you would approach me."

The man squinted his eyes and set his drink on the bar. Tobrecan glanced to the red-faced bar tender and found he was much too busy at the other end, near the hearth. He was once again assaulted by the stench of alchohal on the man's breath as he slurred a second sentence "Your pretty smart-mouthed, Boy!" He spat the last word and Tobrecan paused to wipe spittle from his cheek.

"With all due respect, sit down, or i'll put you down." At this, the man's eyes widened, squinted once again, and he reared back for a punch. Tobrecan sighed as the man almost careened backwards and set his ale on the counter. The punch sailed in the general direction of the traveler's face, but with a step to the side, it was no longer in the right place. With a look that seemed almost put-out, Tobrecan hit the man once in the nose. His hand shot to his nose before his comrades stood and went to the aid of their drunken friend. He fell into them, knocking them all over. Tobrecan payed for his drink, and left.

As he prepared to leave the town of Bree (as it was a little later than mid-day), having no wish to stay there, the men filed outside. Tobrecan turned to them as they came torwards him, the first one swinging a fist before he stopped, leaving him off-balance, and in the perfect position for an elbow to the back, falling face-first onto the ground. The second one took a step forward and received a quick kick to the gut, bowling him over. The last man pulled his blade and thrust at Tobrecan. He jumped back and pulled his own blade, feigning a strike at the drunken man's head, who flinched before his blade was stepped upon and broken. The traveler struck the side of the man's head lightly with the but of his blade, toppling him.

Satisfied, Tobrecan finished saddling his horse, patting his head before climbing up and leaving the village, off torwards Weathertop. 'I've always meant to see Amon Sul. I'll spend the night up there, gaze at the stars, perhaps meet a Ranger. Always wanted to see what the buzz was about....' his thoughts resembled that of an old hobbit as he thought of just about everything but the fight, as he meant to. It wasn't even a blip on his radar.

It is funny that your character should want to be a Healer, since that is one of my RL callings. If you ever need background information on Herbal healing and such, I would be glad to help

(OOC: Arwen, i may hold you to that. I'm aiming for a medical field as a career. For the character, he is a healer. Kind of like a traveling doctor sort of guy. Glorfindel, Bear, thank you for the praise)

Tobrecan had traveled through the night, and the stone pillars of Weathertop were now within his sight, standing with an outline of stars behind them. The traveler smiled and patted his horse as he trotted up the path to the top of the structure. The closer he got to the top, he started hearing sounds ahead of him. Tobrecan dismissed it as paranoia before he made it to the top and saw a form lying on the stone floor. The traveler hopped from his horse and his hand went to the hilt of his sword. As he drew closer, he saw a green cloak. However this cloak wasnt exactly green. It was closer to gray, blending with the paving of Weathertop. He gently rolled the person over, and saw that it was an elf woman. Tobrecan caught his breath briefly. Never had he seen such a beautiful being. Her platinum blond hair was revealed as he removed the hood from her cloak. Her skin was the pale color of the elves. When he looked away from her face, his eyes were drawn down her body, but stopped at her stomach, which had what looked to be a blade wound. Tobrecan stood and once again placed his hand on the hilt of his blade. He hastened over to his horse, and his medical bag.

After he returned to his bag and pulled a mortar and pestle, however the herb he was looking for wasnt there. Tobrecan cursed softly and dropped the alchemical tools back in his bag, pulling out a vial which contained water that was gently glowing. It was a special water Tobrecan had gotten once when he had visited Rivendell. t was magical in a way the traveler didnt know, but it worked well. As he walked back over to his paitent, he saw she was stirring.

"Do not worry, I am a healer."

He gently lifted part of her garments, only enough to view the wound. First, he probed around the wound, making sure part of the sword wasnt broken off inside of it. Luckily, it was clean. Tobrecan held up the vial and unscrewed the top before dripping a drop onto the wound. There was a puff of steam, and the wound seemed to melt away, the single drop expanding and going as deep as the wound, throwing more steam into the air. With a gasp the woman sat up quickly.

"Yes, Ive been told it is quite a cold feeling when it works its magic."

Tobrecan would have introduced himself there, however the elven woman had whipped a knife around and was now holding it to his neck. He now noticed her eyes were a leaf green color. There was a fire behind them as she addressed him.

"Never should you touch me without my permission!"

Tobrecan, although in a less than ideal position, took offence to this, and in his usual smart-mouthed fashion, responded matter-of-factly: "You were in no condition to be giving anyone permission for anything" The traveler said, gently pushing the knife away from his jugular Had I not helped you, that wound would have killed you before I was a mile from this place."

The woman let the knife fall and slipped it into the sheath on her thigh which Tobrecan had neglected before. She felt the place where the wound had once been, but only found smooth skin, although there was a small, straight white line where it had been.

"Who are you?" She asked him, standing up and brushing off the front of her clothing. She wore a simple, yet enchanting gray suit of dress, suitable for both travel and regal meetings. Tobrecan noticed all this without so much as glancing away from her mesmerizing green eyes.

"My name is Tobrecan. I am a traveler, an adventurer of sorts, however my true calling is that of a healer. I simply want to see the world in which I live."

It was the elfs turn to look the man up and down, her own eyes rested on the gray-blue ones of Tobrecan. He stood slightly taller than she was, of an average build, and his golden hair was shorn around his shoulders, and unlike most men of the time, his hair also fell about his forehead in several locks, cut just above the brow. He wore simple traveling clothes, however his posture was that of a trained soldier.

"I am Huredhiel, maiden of Lothlorien." She said, standing a little taller and looking around the ancient watchtower. "I am a scout, sent out to observe the condition of the world outside the reaches of the wood. I was attacked by Orcs traveling through here. I managed to slay most of them with my bow, but my quiver was soon empty, and I had to use my knife. One of them got in a strike from an accursed curved blade. I managed to drag myself here when he fled."

"Orcs? Here?" asked Tobrecan, puzzled "Why so far from Mordor..." He asked himself. Prior to the news, he was observing Huredhiel, tall and slender like most elves, and her hair fell down past the small of her back, silver blond and shining in the moonlight. Her ears were leaf-shaped, as all elves were.

"I do not know the answer to your question, but I must continue on my quest for Lorien." She said, drawing her cloak around her tighter before turning "I will take my leave now. Thank you Tobrecan, healer of men."

Tobrecan stepped forwards, not wanting to see her go "Must you leave so soon? At least allow me to accompany you. I too want to survey the land, for my own purposes of course, but a healer would be helpful on this quest of yours."

Huredhiel stopped and stood and place for a moment before turning and responding "You may accompany me to Rohan, which I passed on my way from Lorien. We shall see about your accompanying me later on in my journeys. We will use your mount."

Tobrecan smiled and turned back to his steed, a dark brown horse, great and fit for battle, as once was its purpose. The stallions name was Haizum, and could easily carry his master and an elf maiden, who weighed next to nothing. "It is a simple task for Haizum, but tonight, we shall sleep under the stars, tomarrow we will breakfast and start out for Rohan." said Tobrecan as he layed out his sleeping bag, which was wear Huredhiel would sleep. He then prepared a makeshift bed with two extra blankets, however Huredhiel had fallen asleep on a patch of grass nearby. The traveler shook his had and slipped into his bag and quickly fell asleep.

I meant to do more than an ooc to respond to you guys' comments.

I wanted to make a healer who was also skilled in other areas, and can handle himself in a fight. However, outside of googling it, i don't have much knowledge of herbs, so i might have to ask you Arwen.

Thanks Glorfindel. I was actually thinking about making it first person, but that's kind of hard to do in settings such as that. Since most rping is done in third person, this is kind of me rping with myself.

Bear, thanks for the welcome, im glad to be here. I wanted to show how a healer can still kick some...butt (for the lack of a better word)

Mouth, I am actually just making this up as i go along.

(OOC: Just wanted to add this in here)

Tobrecan stood in line with the other soldiers on the wall. The bow was not made for someone his height, and he found it hard to keep the bow string taunt, but he suffered through it. The sea of black armored Uruk-Hai hit their weapons on the ground and roared, causing a wave of noise to sweep over Tobrecan. He was a little taller than most fourteen year olds, so he had a great view at the number of great orcs. Needless to say, he was a bit disheartened. The rain started to pour, making Tobrecan quite uncomfortable in his Rohirrim armor which was already too large for him. A man near him, who Tobrecan knew as a simple old farmer, let his bowstring slip in the rain, letting his arrow fly. Tobrecan watched it soar through the air and wedge itself into the neck of a goblin-man. It fell backwards, and its former allies pushed the dead weight forward, causing him to land face first in a puddle. There were calls yelled in elven which Tobrecan didnt understand. The elven archers near him pulled their bow strings taunt and waited for another command. The Uruk-Hai charged, and another elven word was yelled out. The elves let loose their arrows, piercing numerous uruks.

Give them a volley! Fire!

That, Tobrecan understood. He aimed a bit higher into the air and released his arrow. It flew straight up before dipping and piercing the uruk standing on the rock straight through his helm. He careened sideways and fell, impaling himself on his soldiers spears. Tobrecan smiled despite himself and reached for another arrow, notched it, and let it fly. He watched to see where it went out of the corner of his eye, but he again set up an arrow and fired. As he attempted to prepare another arrow, a ladder with an Uruk riding on it hit the wall right in front of him. In shock, he fell backwards, accidently loosing his arrow which struck the great orc in the neck, causing him to fall into the others climbing up behind him. Tobrecan fell off the wall and listed towards the wet ground.

(OOC: Yup, you guessed it: dream sequence)

Good RP Polishsmile.gif So this guy is dreaming about Uruk-Hai while he is travelling with this Elf? Or is the whole lot a dream and he is really some drunkard in Bree?

Keep it coming!

Tobrecan woke with a start, shooting up from his bag while his hand went for his blade, which was laying next to him. Instead of Uruk-Hai standing in front of him, Huredhiel was sitting next to a fire she had made, cooking bacon from Tobrecans provisions. They breakfasted, and set out on the way to Rohan. Soon they passed by Rivendell. Tobrecan made a note to head back out here after he escorted Huredhiel to Edoras. They gave Isengard a wide berth. Rumors had resurfaced of Orcs moving back in, and the people of Rohan heard the howl of Wargs at night. They soon passed the Gap of Rohan, and made their way quickly through the rolling plains until they eventually saw Edoras, Tobrecans birthplace. The Golden Halls of Meduseld brought back memories of his childhood on the rolling plains of Rohan. As they drew closer to the entrance to Edoras, the sight of the mail the guards were wearing once again brought back memories of the battle at Helms Deep when he was only 14, and the years after that he spent as a Rider of Rohan.

Haizum trotted into Edoras, the guards recognizing a fellow Rohirrim, and they went into the stables. The pair hopped off of the horse and hooked him up to the stables. Tobrecan patted his flank Home sweet home, eh Haizum? The horse neighed softly as Tobrecan and Huredhiel left the stables.

I must go talk to the king and discover the condition of this area. Huredhiel said, starting of toward Muduseld. Tobrecan started to follow before he thought better of it.

Actually, I have some business to take care of. he said, stopping and starting to turn around. We shall meet back here when our dealings are done.

Tobrecan made his way through the town until he came to a house of average size for Edoras. He approached it, and knocked on the door. There was the sound of a dog barking inside. There was some shuffling and the door was opened. Standing there was a woman of about 50, almost 60 years old. She looked up at him, and after she peered at him for a while, there was realization in her eyes. Toby! Youve come back!

She hugged him tight around his middle, as he was much taller than his mother. Hello mother, how have you been? He smiled from ear to ear as he hugged his mother. She took his hand and pulled him inside. Sitting in a chair by the window was a man of around 60. He turned and looked at Tobrecan, and a small smile came to his face.

Hello son. He said, taking a walking stick from next to the chair and slowly standing. He had an air about him that commanded respect, a respect that Tobrecan has had for him as long as he could remember. He walked over and gave him a hug. It was a pleasant reunion, and they sat and talked for quite a time about things that had happened since Tobrecan left, and about his travels. Eventually, Tobrecan noticed something.

Where are Govannon and Camden? he asked, slightly puzzled. His parents looked at each other and responded There are in the barracks. Tobrecan nodded, realizing that they had joined the Rohirrim military. The talked for a while about this before there was a sharp horn call. There was ruckous outside as mailed men ran for the stables. Tobrecan turned to his parents.

What is going on here? He asked them. They looked grave as they responded. It is the call to arms. Warg riders are coming this way.

Tobrecan didnt want any more explaining, so he left the house and made for the stables. He climbed back up into the stirupps after struggling through riders going for their horses as well. On the way out of the stable, Tobrecan grabbed a spear and a shield from a nearby rack and continued out into the streets. The riders were heading in the direction of Isengard. It seemed the travelers suspicion about Orthanc had been correct. It was under Orc control. No one seemed to notice the cloaked man amongst mail, as they were all focusing on the battle ahead. When the reached it, they could see a formation of Wargs massing through the gate. Orders were shouted in the language of the horse-lords, and they fell into line, Tobrecan amongst them, preparing for the attack. Since he was 14, Tobrecan had been a rider. The wargs continued to advance. Horses neighed nervously. Haizum s****ed his hoof across the ground. An order was yelled in Orcish, and the riders spurred their wargs into a run. The Rohirrim did the same, and Tobrecan spurred himself into battle. At the last minuted, Tobrecan wondered if he should have grabbed a helmet. The warg in front of Haizum pounced, aiming for Tobrecan sitting in the saddle.

Polishguy, your story is good. I'm a self proclaimed writer myself and hope to publish someday. It takes a lot of courage to post a Middle Earth story among such authorities on the subject. I salute you. If you ever needed advice though this is where you'll find it. Good luck and I'm looking forward to the next post.

Polish Guy,
I hear that. I can be frustrating.
It can be called "writer's block".
Often it can be caused by stress outside of writing. It can also be slowed by not being sure where you want your characters to go.
Putting it the framework of temporarily losing your muse is actually a very good way to frame it.
Venus and Athena were goddess's of creativity and in an archetypal psychology mode to regain their favor required sacrifice...which you have given them by not writing.
A trick to regain the muse is to repeat your last written sentence and either change the words and write a sentence to follow it. Don't try and fit it to your story...just put words down... The warg in front of Haizum pounced, aiming for Tobrecan sitting in the saddle. So Mary had a little lamb... The warg in front of Haizum pounced, aiming for Tobrecan sitting in the saddle. The yellow teeth were broken and jagged. The warg in front of Haizum pounced, aiming for Tobrecan sitting in the saddle. With a quick twist of the wrist Tobrecan drove his blade through the gaping black rotting teeth and deep into the monster's throat.
Try it! It works.

No doubt he has something in the pipeline soon enough.

So this guy, he is around at the end of the Third Age? In the War of the Ring?
