Random

Her hands came together in front of her and formed a soft triangle.  She exhaled.  The room around her was open but small.  She saw it clearly.  Her left foot rested lightly on the inside of her right calf and she exhaled until her lungs were flat.  She knew they were flat because she could feel them as well as her heart beat.  The left foot floated out directly in line with it's corresponding shoulder.  Abrubtly she cut the room in half and pivoted one eighty on a steady right toe.  She was in defensive now and the ball of her left foot rested lightly on the floor.

"The Dragons are both dead," she thought as she shifted weight to the left foot and faced the origial direction.  She breathed in.

"What do I do now?" she exhaled again and this time shuffled forward lightly.  Her Hands always in line but moving, like her eyes and her feet.  She saw the open space in fractions; half, one third, a quarter.  Always moving, she kept perfect balance.  There was a noise in the alley below.  Sounded like a trash can falling.  Another pivot and she cut the air in the room fluidly.  Her hands now a half rotation from where they had started.  This would be a long night.  She breathed.

"What do I do now?"

Not really. I could make something up. I was just feeling inspired last night. If anyone has an idea or feels creative they could write in the next bit. We used to do something like that way back in highschool. Can't remember what it was called though.

The decoded message was very clear. She read it again wondering what the hell was going on. Pheonix. Status: Active. Objective: Terminate Code Alpha. She deciphered the random letters with just a glance. Three hundred and eighty-three times she had recieve an alert. This was three hundred eighty-four. This one was different though. The Alpha! Were they kidding?! They had built Their entire network around him and now he was to be terminated and by her, the newest addition to the team. She had been trained and retrained to not think, just respond, a well oiled and obedient machine, but when one faced the Alpha one needed to be thinking; cold, hard and clear.

Very random so far, though well written. Any background to these mysterious snippets you're throwing our way Lom?

11:45 a.m. Not exactly brunch anymore. She was supposed to meet her mentor for a briefing at 10:30. He was never late. She shifted nervously and thought about ordering that mamosa the waitress had suggested upon her arrival.

"Cold, hard and clear," she thought. Inhale deeply using your eyes and exhale entirely using your lungs. It was a random mantra but it worked in a primative sort of way. She stilled her body and her mind.

"You want some more coffee, Hun," the waitress asked. The look on her face was clear. She should have said, 'He ain't comin' so if you're still waitin' on him your jus' kiddin' yourself.'

"I guess I'll order," she wasn't leaving yet.

"Okay," the waitress wasn't relieved or impressed, "Whatch' want?"

"Two egg whites on dry toast with cheese," she didn't care what the woman thought. One did not get invited to meet for breakfast, or brunch or lunch, by him and then not wait patiently. Why this place though? What a dive!

"Sure thing. More coffee?" this time the waitress managed a weak smile.

A slender hand over the top of the mug was all the answer she got.

OOC: I'm connecting them, I think. I never write stories but they write themselves. I seldom know where I'm getting them from or how they end. This is a little more dis-jointed than I'm used to but I think it'll work out in the end. (I hope)

'He's just a man' she thought.
-He's a dragon!-her mind countered.
'I know! The last one' she thought.
-Because you killed the other one-
'Shut up, I don't need your help'
-I'm not helping-
'No kidding, now hold the sight steady,' why does she argue with herself? She didn't know but she hadn't always done so.
'Is he looking right at me?'
-Yes, he sees you!-
'Now we run!'
-Now we run-

The blade on her slender throat made it a little difficult to think.

" You're insane," she spoke softly, barely a whisper. If she flexed her kneck muscles to much the blade would bite. She was certain of that.

" Insane!?," his tone was incredulous. She could feel the moist warmth of his breath as he spoke more into her cheek than beside it. His lips feathered against her the soft skin of her face, " No, my dear, brilliant. You are good, very good. I was begining to worry about you like I had worried for so long about him. You took care of that little problem for me, though, didn't you, darling."

Her head swam. This wasn't happening. It couldn't be.

The first one had been easy in concept. Infiltration was always priority number one and usually the easiest way to accomplish this sort of thing. It wasn't neccessary, though. The relationship was already there. Then lunch came and went and he never showed. Doubt is nagging and a nusiance at the best of times. When dabbling in this profession it's deadly. He couldn't know. One never knew about the others' jobs. Then the contact. 'Going home. Need peace.' Short and sweet the message meant a lot. The target, Alpha, had grown up on a little back country road off of highway 79. There was a pier with that number at the marina. She had been there with him several times.

'Our secret,' he had said, 'my sanctuary'

She had one too but hadn't been foolish enought to let anyone know where it was. Not even the Alpha. The closest thing to a friend she had in the world.

'There's a hit on me,' he had shouted from across the pier, ' is it you?'
"What are you going on about?" she stood still where he had ordered her to stop. "You've lost it, man. There is no hit."
'You're lying,' he stepped forward. His body showing the anger that his voice and face tried to hide. 'It is you. How could you? To even think of it.'
"We don't think, Scott. We're not allowed to," she was calm.
'Try it on for size,' this time he did yell and then there was his gun. Where did he get that from.
"What are you doing," she sincerly wanted to know. How do I recover control she thought. There was no way to cover, no way to run. The bay was looking enticing even with the garbage and toxic ooze running in it.
'Did I read you wrong?' he was not asking for an answer, 'Do you really feel nothing for me? After... After...' he trailed off. His face contorted the emotion was slowly coming forward.
"We are animals, Scott. Well trained, expensive, expendable animals. Isn't that what you always taught me? Aren't those your words" was that emotion in her voice?
He retreated a step. That was good. He was no longer on the offensive and she assessed her options again.
'Expendable. Yes that is what we are. We live our entire lives serving someone elses purpose and then, when the purpose is served, we die. That is the meaning of life. We are slaves. All of us. Slaves to an idea that is not our own. Would we have it any other way? Apparently not. No matter who we are, no matter where we come from or who we serve, a man or a diety, we still serve. We search for someone to serve. We beg for it.' he looked at the gun in his hand, 'Are you ready to serve your god, my friend, because I'm done.'
The shot was true. The blood ran. She was still standing still when the Alpha's eyes glazed over. Moving now but the air was dragging her, slowing her down, she went to him.
"What a mess," she thought. She took the gun, stood and walked back to her car.
"What a mess," she had thought and what a mess she was in now. She needed to think quickly. The knife at her throat had tasted blood before.

lomoduin,
Love the existential internal dialogue...And the secret agent type thing.
Action and philosophy...like that too.
I'm having trouble keeping the pieces in the right order...or maybe I'm a little slow on who is holding the knife to her throat...Scott...isn't he dead?
More please!

She was calm. The street lights flashed by, the store fronts reflecting the sedan she drove dead on the speed limit. Why had the Alpha done that? Why had a dragon taken his own life? She had been an easy target. She had no where to run on the empty dock. She needed time to think, time to put the puzzle together. She turned the car slowly into the drive. Monster statues that protected the dead were everywhere. Near the rear of the cemetary she pulled to a stop. A great oak spread it's branches over the many plots at it's ancient base. Why did he shoot himself? She got out of the sedan and walked twenty yards with unseeing eyes. She knelt at the foot of a forgotten grave. How did he know she had recieved orders for him? She tipped her head up to the stars, inhaled deeply and then studied the tomb stone. It was old. Time and weather were slowly wearing away the detail. Her hands sat quietly on each knee. Maria Elizabeth Watson had been born 1932 and had been called home in 1977, the stone read. Maria had been a loving mother and wife and she was to rest in peace. She didn't know Maria or why Maria had passed on but she shared the name exactly. Years before she had sneaked in to the cemetary and laid down to sleep at the base of the old oak. She had discovered that even desperate crazy people were less comfortable amongst the dead and avoided them. She was safer in the cemetary than ten feet from a busy street in an alley. Some time the next morning she had stumbled upon this grave and felt connected with someone for the first time.

He placed his right hand on the cold cement of the six foot tall angel on a four foot pedastal beside him. The angel's extended arms and wings were wide enough to cast a shadow on three graves. It's hands were drooping and it's head was hung in a submmissive gesture. With your grace, I commit these souls to you, is what it suggested. He never understood the symbol. Something so powerful in a constant battle to protect and usher into heaven the lesser human it was assigned to, compassionate and obedient always. How did you get stuck with that job?
He looked back at his target. She too was in a submissive position. The familiar warmth was growing inside him. His heart was beating to quickly. He closed his eyes took a deep breath and was himself again. He had severly under estimated the connection between the Alpha and this one. He had seen them together, his number one agent and this rescued stray, the Phoenix. He had wanted Alpha to do away with her. Placing a hit on him using her was the easiest way he had seen to accomplish this. She would go after Alpha and he would be forced to defend himself. Simple enough. The orders came over non-existant lines and could never be tracked. Of course there would have been fallout issues with Alpha but if he became too much of a problem he would be termed also.
It hadn't happened like that. How the hell was he supposed to know that not only were they plotting to take over the agency but they were in love with one another? Tramp! Everything had been fine. He was the top of the food chain. He was even servicing a few high profile public officials thanks to the Alpha's efficency and skill. Phoenix had been a welcomed back up for the small jobs that needed to be done while the Alpha was busy with bigger clients. Trained by Omega, she had exhibitted the same apptitude for the business, the demons in her closet seemingly justifying and empowering her. Omega didn't care what personal delimas his agents had as long as the job was quiet, neat and done.
Then they had started meeting in secret. He followed them. They met for breakfast three times, at the pier twice and there was only one reason why they would be having so much contact. A coup. A mutany. He had always made sure they were covered with every job and this was how they repaid him? By plotting against him? He had started this agency, made the contacts himself.
He hadn't wanted to lose Alpha. Scott had been his best agent. It was done though. If there was one thing they all knew it was there's no coming back from the gun, no reset button. If he had been so dilluted by her that it was better to die than to kill her he was to far gone to bring back then. The Alpha's death was a necessary evil. There would be another Alpha, eventually. There was always another willing to kill. Especially for the money he was being offered by his clients.
Phoenix was still kneeling quietly in front of the grave she visited from time to time. Omega had researched the name on the stone. Other than sharing the same name the women were unrelated. He had never understood why she came back to this spot. She visited it after every job though and he had known she would be here tonight.
He drew the blade from its hidden sheath. The cold steel pressed to the back of his forearm felt good. He had thought about sniping her. It was an easy shot. He was only 20 yards from her now. The Phoenix deserved more. She deserved to feel the first bite of his perfectly honed knife into her flesh. The painless first drops of blood to flow onto the the polished metal and the followin sting that grew into relentless waves of nausea. He wanted to see her eyes rolling nervously in their sockets. He wanted to smell, no taste her fear. If he was lucky she would at least struggle a little and not go quietly like Scott had. He was a trained killer and worked for money but he was still a killer.
The tributes to death and the livings devotion to the dead allowed him to move in unseen. Crouching, he cut the 20 yard to 8. He slipped quietly between angels gargoyles and virgin Mary's. Phoenix still hadn't moved. He stopped behind the last tomb stone between himself and his target still a good 15 feet away.

lomoduin,
Very good!
Very, very good!
What a great way to deepen the plot and introduce a villian.
And a paranoid, sadistic, and homicidal one at that.
Love the stone angel prop lead in.
And now she has the name,
Phoenix!
Knowing what a phoenix is and her kneeling by the grave???
Can't wait for the next installment!
You go girl...you have me hooked!

She knew he was behind her somewhere. She knew he had been here waiting for the perfect moment to strike and she had been kneeling here patiently waiting. Her patience and her nerve were wearing thin. Why hadn't the Omega struck? What was he waiting for? Did he sense a trap? No. No way. Breath girl she told herself. In through your eyes and out through your mouth. He'll show. He'll show and when he does all hell will break loose.

She watched the event unfold for a bit from the comfy front seat of the sedan. Omega slipped from monument to tombstone, thinking he was unseen, thinking that his foe knelt before him. He was wrong. She drug heavily on her cigarrett. This will be the last one, she told herself, thinking of the smoke not the target.

Omega made no noise. The thick soles of his combat boots tracked slowly, carefully across the last 15 open feet between him and Phoenix. The back of his long blade tuck neatly against his forearm. This would not be quick and painless. He planned on de-masking her. There were no public records on her and without a face or dental records to identify her she would become another Jane Doe. How sad? How unfortunate for the apt killer. Ten feet now and Phoenix still hadn't moved. He stopped and surveyed the immediate area. Dead people, trees, statues, her car; nothing to set off alarms but an alarm was going off in his head anyway. He looked back at his prey from here he could see here breathing slowly and deeply and she should have been able to hear his thoughts. Why the hell was she not moving?

His head snapped back to the car. Something was wrong. Had he seen movement, a light, maybe? Something was wrong. His mind wheeled through the input. He had experienced stimuli from the car. Movement, light, it didn't matter. He had caught something and his sixth sense was in hyper alert. Retreat? No, too close to target. Complete mission? Yes but how do I do it without getting my precious head blown off?

She saw him crouch, saw him glance around and them settle on the sedan. Damn smoking. She had tried to quit but old habits were so hard to break. Like her habit of flicking the smoldering butt ends of her cigarretts out of car windows. Oh well, maybe things weren't to much different. If Omega had actually seen her he would be making his move. She knew he sensed something amiss but didn't quite have his finger on it. Not yet but the man wouldn't waste anytime. Right now she knew his game plan. Get rid of Alpha and Phoenix so he could be top dog again. Well that didn't figure into Phoenix's plans at all. Alpha was a shame but in the end a neccessary loss. She actually had come to be very fond of Alpha but so had Phoenix and that was a problem. No matter how close the twins were that was one thing she refused to share with her sister. Her men.

Omega sprang forward, the toes of his boots dislodging the soft turf. He smelled the fresh earth, felt the sweat run down the middle of his back before soaking into his dark grey cotton shirt and saw the light breeze toss a lock of Phoenix's hair back over her shoulder. He wrapped his arms around her shoulders and took her to the ground. They rolled once coming to stop with him beneather her, both looking up into a stary sky. He pinned her back to his chest, wrapped in legs over hers at the knees and deftly spun the knife in his hand to rest lightly on her lovely slender kneck.

"Where's your friend?" Omega breathed through her hair.

"You're insane," she spoke softly, barely a whisper. If she flexed her kneck muscles to much the blade would bite. She was certain of that.

" Insane!?," his tone was incredulous. She could feel the moist warmth of his breath as he spoke more into her cheek than beside it. Her head swam. This was wrong. The plan wasn't going to work with them in this position. The plan wouldn't work and she was going to die.

The front windshield of the sedan shattered into a million tiny pieces and rained down on the hood. A clod of dirt between Phoenix's and Omega's legs sprang up in front of them. The brief flash was a tell-tale but she had to risk it. The passenger side door flew open and she sprinted the short distance from the car to the forrest of tombstones. Omega fired at the shadow. Now he knew three important things. This new target was female, fast and didn't want to shoot Phoenix. The last one was the gamble he had taken when he brought her on top of him. Now he needed to move. The bad part was the woman he was holding as a shield was a tiger not a dove. Phoenix was dangerous, especially at this range.

A quick fix would have to do for now. He brought the but of his bouy down as hard as he could from this angle on Pheonix's slender shoulder near the base of her neck. A short yip escaped her and she tossed her head back abruptly but luckily for Omega it was a weak attempt. She managed to make contact with his cheek bone and he was sure it would be sore tomorrow but it was nothing to worry with. He flipped her on to her stomach and rising, brought the knife down again. This time the blow was true and much stronger. Pheonix went limp. She would be down long enough for him to deal with the other woman. He ducked behind the trunk of the old oak, sheathing his blade and pulling the gun he always had on his person. He kissed it's barrel and smiled ravinously. "Never leave home with out it, Baby," he said to no one in particular.

He ejected his clip, it was full, and after re-engaging checked the chamber. He was allowing himself to enjoy the moment and was looking forward to the coming hunt.
Omega stretched out his neck and rolled his shoulders to losen the muscles. He took a deep breath with his eyes closed and his ears open. Opening his eyes he scanned the grave yard for movement and shadow. Nothing moved. Aahh... Clever quarry. This would be fun.

Phoenix's twin hurried out of sight and line of fire. Damn it! Now she needed to regain control of the situation. She knew where he was but he had no idea, other than a vague direction, where she was. That was at least something. She had stopped by the same angel statue with the out stretched wings that Omega had studied earlier.

Her vantage point offered the unwelcome sight of Phoenix's body stretched unmoving on the lawn under the great oak. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. This was not the plan. Everything had gone smoothly up till now, however, so she should have expected it. Well smoothly other than her lover, Alpha finding out there was two of them and sacraficing himself rather than having to take them out. He really had been a great guy. Such is life though and sometimes things get messy.

The weak and sporadic street lights that offered ambiguous, amber safety from the encroaching dark of night seemed suddenly like the blinding light of heaven. The shadows of the tombstones, likewise, seemed like dark holes of invisibility; perfect to hide ones adversary. Undaunted and leering, Omega crept from one to another, gun in hand, only pausing now and again to listen for clues on the whisper of a breeze that blew in the heavy boughs of the oak behind him. He sniffed. No perfume, as he had hoped, after all he was hunting a woman, only a vague tang of salt from the gulf. Who was she? How did she know about the Phoenix? Was she with a rival agency? He guessed there were ways to find out. New plan, nutralize this latest bump in his proverbial road, terminate Phoenix, transport and extract info from said bump. Things really were looking brighter!

Phoenix's sister froze by a head stone that had seemed like cover enough a second earlier but was rapidly shrinking in her minds eye. She had seen something. Just a flicker and quite possible a trick of her nervous eye. She didn't like it but there it was. Nervous, well, yes of course she was nervous. This was the Omega she was dealing with and this was Phoenix's part of things. The hunting of prey. She though that, whatever Phoenix might say, the young woman actually did enjoy her part in this little drama. She, the sister, was the gamemaster, the "brains" of the opperation. The opperation was get rid of a crazy, skizo-killer in charge of other killers and set her self up as their fearless leader. Why not? The two women had been able, thus far, to keep the others in the dark about their duality. All the opperatives were a bit quirky so, so what if sometimes Phoenix smoked and sometimes she couldn't stand the smell.

"Focus, bitch!" she told herself, harshly. This was absolutely no time at all to be fanciful or nervous. If she could just get Omega before he got them. She silenced her mind, as much as possible but couldn't hear anything. Suddenly, she was afraid to leave her cover. What if he were listening right now? If she took a step and so much as swished the hem of her nicely tailored slacks he'd be on her like a cat on a mouse. She leaned her head against the cool stone and took a deep breath and let it out slowly. She had to get a hold of herself.

"Wake up, Phoenix," she thought deeply, sending the thought as much as possible to her twin. "Please, wake up, my dear."

There it was! Omega licked his lips with such vigor that a bead of spit gathered on the lower one. It sat there, trembling slightly and refracting the light of the street lamps like an evil, living jewel. His mad-man's eyes were wide and glassy with excitement and anticipation. He had heard a sigh. Not the sigh of a wind through a branch or across some rough hewn stone but the delicate sigh of some trapped, soft, vunerable thing. The fear of this thing resonated in the air around him for a moment and then was swept lightly away by the gentle gulf breeze. That same breeze brought him another morsle of delight and his hightened senses reveled in its definitiveness. Cigarette smoke. He crouched and moved silently toward the smell. It seemed to swell up around him like a sea. It crashed into his flared nostrils like breakers on a beach and when he thought the scent was strong enough to actually see hanging in the air he felt a tremor of excitement go through his core again. There, protruding from the shadow and looking like a neon sign, was the polished toe of a ladies patent leather shoe. He sucked the bead of spit, now on a short runner, back into his mouth and made his move.
