That is a very interesting thugh narrow question Olorin of Nienna.

As you may know when Morgoth was defeated he was brought back to Valinor, judged by the Valar. His feet were hewn from under him and he was bound in the Chain of Aule (I always forget the name). Then he was cast out of the door to the night.

It is desputable whether he was cast out intoThe Void or into the Outer Darkness that surrounds Ea (where Ungoliant whence cam). There he stayed forever watching the wolrd, until thousands of years later (long after the War of the Ring) when he saw that the Valar were growing weary with the world. Then he broke through the Door to the Night and summoned back his old minions and wages war upon the plains of Valinor, in which Sauron is slain by Olorin, and Morgoth duels with Tulkas and Eonwe, who both come to no avail, until Morgoth is finally slain by Turin Turumbar. Then him and the spirits of the Maiar who served Melkor went back to Eru.

damn...I think if it was my book I would have jumped after it like Gollum after the ring...hehe, no only joking
indeed, Morgoth probably awaited his chance, and in the meantime probably went looking for the Flame Imperishable again
and to add something, the concept of the Dagor Dagorath, as was presented by Glorfindel is indeed all we know on this subject however Tolkien never cleared this matter up, so we can't be sure of his ideas on this...

I would also take Christopher Tolkien's advice of not trying to take too much out of the Dagor Dagorath:

'Into this final resolution of the evil in the world it would prove unprofitable,I think, to enquire too closely'~Home IV The Shaping of Middle-earth, The Earliest Silmarillion

I agree on that, and I wanted to add that it is a known fact to many loremasters that towards the end of his life Tolkien added many elements from the Dagor Dagorath to the battle that ended the War of Wrath, so when he died, this topic was clearly not over for him, so as Lord Lorien said, it is a fuzzy topic, and it shouldn't be enquired too closely.

fundamental? define what you see as fundamental...
I'd rather call it uncertain

What Glorfindel wrote about the Dagor Dagorath is the basic fundamental knowledge we know about it. There is more to it but then it begins to get uncertain.
