Research!

I'm going to be writing a paper on Tolkien, and of course the first step is research (everyone's favorite part, right)! Anyhow, I really need some help finding good books on Tolkien. There are quite a few out there, and I'm sure someone here will have a few good suggestions. It doesn't matter what aspect of Tolkien the book covers, just please give me the title, author (if possible), a little about the book, and any comments regarding accuracy or content. Thanks so much in advance, I hope I get a lot of great suggestions!

Well, on Tolkien means you are looking for a biography.
Personally I do not own any biography of JRR Tolkien, but I know a friend that has this:

JRR Tolkien: A Biography by Richard J. Cox and Leslie Jones
2003, Greenwood Publishing

I knew the title, got the rest of the information from the internet.

But about the quality of the book itself I can not give my opinion as I have not read it.

It doesn't have to be strictly a biography. Anyhow, I'll check it out. I need as much help as I can get!

Thanks! By the way, you can just call me Atan (though I suppose with the new rank that would be a bit strange). Let me know if you find any more books on Tolkien. Something tells me that this isn't the most popular category on the forums, and I could really use some help!

lots of books out there ..

Biographies by Carpenter, Shippey and Michael White. The former two are very in depth and from exposure to JRR himself. White's one is more critical but has some interesting elements to it.

Tolkien and the Great War - interesting bits I've not heard of before from the biographies.

Peoples' Guide to JRR Tolkien - indirectly has things in it on him

Even Origin of Tolkien's Middle Earth for Dummies might glean you some information.

Heck, even bits like the features on the LOTR extended DVD's have things on JRR that you might be able to use.

Could probably dig out some websites that has some information on him too if you wanted.

Anyway, those are the ones in my library. I'm sure there are others.

hmm...I think I won't bow before her as she'll probably use this opportunity to sting me with that poisoned needle while I'm not looking...

Well now, back on topic (and I'm not going to sting anyone, feel free to bow all you like *evil grin*). In regard to your suggestions so far, well, maybe I should list each of them individually...

JRR Tolkien: A Biography- Either picked this up at the library or have it on my list

Biographies by Carpenter, Shippey and Michael White- Either picked this up at the library or have it on my list

Tolkien and the Great War- Yippee! I've read this one, and thought it was rather interesting as well!

Peoples' Guide to JRR Tolkien- I was wondering how relevant this one is, and who the author might be...

Origin of Tolkien's Middle Earth for Dummies- Wouldn't even think of buying this one, but I might check it out to see if it has any valuable information

And...One more thing, would anyone happen to know of a complete listing of books about Tolkien (I believe there once was one, but the person passed away and no one has updated the list since then...)
