I think my favourite characters in the Sil would be Melkor and Ulmo.

Agrees with Bauglir. (no need for this Emoticon but thought it looked good!)

lol...that emoticon does look good Glor1235. It's not totally inappropriate either. It could be Melkor and Ulmo wrestling or something. (Melkor would be the blue one of course)

Both, he could be the red becuase of his nature, but could be the Blue as he is winning the battle.

That's true. The red one should be winning.

Anyhow, we've slightly veered off topic I feel.

anyway, I think the story of Eol is really a tragical one, and in a way the one of Aredhel as well...but one has a better end then the other

I couldnt pick just one. My favorite characters are Feanor and his sons and grandson. I chose the family because they are the key influence in all the events of Middle-Earth over three ages. I'm sure some of the loremasters here would dispute that, but then without the Silmarils and the Rings of Power, there isnt much of a storyline.

Melian and Luthien would do it for me for women.

As for men, i would say Beren, since he dared to accept the challenge of Elu Thingol, King of Doriath and Mother of Luthien, dared to penetrate Angband and rob a Silmaril.

Gil-galad rules all.

Umm, Fingolfin.

Gil-Galad is first. But for second I would have to say a tie between Fingolfin and Maedhros. Both were very heroic. On of my favorite parts in the Silmarillion is after Fingolifin dies wear it says. "The orcs mad no boast".

I just thought that was cool because the orcs always have something to say.

Third would have to be another tie between thorondor (If I can vote for an Eagle) and Beren.

definatly morgoth and feanor. they're bitter enemies, and yet, in some respects very simular (stealing, lying, persuation etc). A perfect character foil.

Sauron.  Although he was not mentioned in great detail, he spent the first age learning much under Morgoth, and leading his armies to several key victories.   Sauron also outruled his master, thus taking the mantle of DarkLord for himself.   Sauron was also in my opinion, more craftier than Morgoth.

I don't know if Sauron outruled Morgoth.

Sauron ruled through about 2/3s of the second age (say 2500 years) and about 2000 years of the Third Age equalling 4500 total. Whereas although Morgoth only ruled for slightly over 500 years of the First Age he ruled countless ages before he was taken captive after the War of the Powers. Perhaps someone could work it out using the Valinorian years or something however it was a hell of a long time.

Angmar, maybe you should visit the Sauron vs. Morgoth & absolute evil thread in Advanced Lore, you'll find a pretty interesting discussion on that topic

You are correct Bilbo, I was speaking of ruling in correspondance with the first age as a starting point, but Morgoth had been around since the beginning.  And for Sauron being mored crafty, I say that because he was wiser in the way he used his evil.  Morgoth wanted to destroy everything completely, but Sauron wanted to control the will of Middle Earths inhabitants.  So in my opinion Sauron was smarter than his master.

Indeed Sauron does appear more cunning than Morgoth, thus being named Sauron the deceiver. Yet Morgoth grew far more "insane" than Sauron near the end of his reign so simply battered all the lands and there inhabitants rather than try to sway them to his will. He was simply a nihilist, totally bent on destroying all the world (Tolkien says all love and positiveness had departed from him forever), whereas Sauron merely wanted dominion over Middle-earth (thus is why Tolkien said he still had the relics of positive purposes).

My favorite characters would be Manwë, Orodreth, and Elrond on the male side
And Varda/Elbereth, Alatariel, and Nienna for the female side.

I'd have to say Fingolfin. Come on now he was the only one that challenged Morgoth to single combat. He gave Morgoth seven injuries and Morgoth limped all the time after their duel. He als endured the grinding ice after Feanor abandoned him. I also say Manwe as well, him and Ulmo.

It has to be Tuor, Hands down!

Great Quest

Finds a secret passage

A new set armor

Talks with a god and receives a great cape

Find ANOTHER secret passage

Gets to see Gondolin

Marry's above his station

And is the sire of the Kings of the world.

It don't get better than that.

Morgoth, Melkor the Valar who fell into darkness is my favourite character of the first age followed by Feanor and his sons who through their oath against Morgoth caused a lot trouble for the peoples of the first age. I am not very found of the whole Turin saga though.

I have nothing against Turin himself, i just think the tale is a bit too tragic as so many bad things happen in Turin,s life. it is a very sad part of the book and i dont paticurlaly like being sad

Thats a very good point Sweeper if it wasn't for Morgoth, Turins life would have turned out a lot better and the tale would have a better ending, possibly married someone other than his sister and carried on his blood line and contributed to the downfall of Morgoth. So you are right it was Morgoths falt.

I like Eru. Mainly because of the way he creates the world out of music. I think Melkor/Morgoth is a wonderful villain. But my hero is Fingolfin...pretty good model for a loyal friend too. I like Varda and Nienna on the feminine side.

Also in the 'loyal friend' department you could also have Beleg Cuthalion.

Mouth of Sauron,
Your right. Beleg Cuthalion really is that "friend to the end" that we wish we all had.  I should have named Galadriel too.
Thanks for the prompt Mouth of Sauron.

What about Hurin Steadfast as a loyal fiend? Not even after 29 years on Thangorodrim did he reveal the whereabouts of Gondolin, and still kept his word to King Turgon.
