Unrevealed story?

I have read Sil and extracted every of its line numerous times, but some parts look very unexplained and unrevelaed. I know many parts are actually explained in UT and other books, but one thing is troubleing me.

What actually happened to Thingol and Melian during the other events, after they met each other. Such important issue is left unexplained. To me it is ?

What are your unrevealed stories?

Ummm...when you're talking about Thingol and Melian...do you mean when they are entranced? Or just everything after they meet?

If it's the former, then nothing happens with them. They stand there, motionless, until the enchantment is broken.

If you mean the latter, then, well...*hands him The Silmarillion* Basically all of that happens.

I too am unclear about what precisely you mean. As for unrevealed stories, I know that for me at least, I had many questions that were left unanswered. I've just decided that an author can't just tell you everything. If they did, it wouldn't be interesting anymore! That's one reason why it's sometimes better to look at the story as a whole instead of extracting every bit of it and analyzing it.

Well not every aspect could be strictly analysed, Tolkien never had enough time to do all of that, but we should be happy with what we know. However I must say the Silmarillion answers most of the ideas that are presented there, I dunno which quesions you still might have.

No, you see that's the problem! Tolkien didn't analyze every single aspect of his work! That's why you have to look at the whole picture. What really bothers me is that in the case of many authors, people dissect everything and come up with all kinds of hidden meanings and things behind the actual work, often things that the author never intended! I'm not saying that this is the case here, I was just commenting on how you shouldn't overanalyze things...Anyhow, I totally agree with what you said about being happy with what we have!

well he did the best he could and we should be all grateful for that, I for one am...
and the unansered questions do make you think about what may have happened, stimulate your imagination

yup....if a book had every single detail put in, that might be interesting, but it would leave out a lot of the 'magic' of imagination, and coming up with your own reasons. Also, sometimes it's ok for parts to be left out, that arent' really revalent to the whole

well I agree with that
but under one condition
don't try filling up those gaps in lore forums...
because if something isn't there it isn't lore
and speculation (even though sometimes logical and probable) is still only your own creation

Tell me about it TM. I've read some books that were not writen by JRRT, wear they just made up the missing parts to fill in the gaps. Mostly it was David Day. But I've seen it with others also.

I can for example why Rowling intends to kill Harry Potter in the last book, to make sure that no writers will write books about his life after Hogwarts on make money using her idea.
The whole "this is an homage thing" only fools stupid people.
Money is the reason, not homage.

No, noone knows what will happen to Harry in hte last unnamed seventh book, which btw is due to be released in 2007.
So, anyway, let's leave Mr. Potter and his world for now, I only gave him as an example.
These days writers often kill their main character in books to ensure that nobody tries to write "an homage" to their memory and make some money using their idea.
I think that people who write books about "Tolkien's heroes" should be sued and the books should not be allowed.
Otherwise someone might end up saying, oh I know what happens in the Fourth Agem I read it all in another book.

they are in German, but translated from English
I think...The Orks, The Dwarves, The Elves, Elvish Winter, The Dragons, The Orks return, The Trolls
the authors have not even the slightest idea
for example, none of them carefully chooses the names of the characters, like Tolkien does to make sure that they have a meaning matching the character
for example, as a born Romanian I was a little offended to discover that in "The Trolls" all the names of trolls are old Romanian names, and all names of Men are Hungarian names. No creativity at all, just take some names out of some languages that people usually don't know and say you made them up.
even the maps always bare a striking resemblance to those made by tolkien, however the area is always much, much smaller.
because they are not good enough to invent a whole magical world, these writers just make up a piece of a magical world and present it.
I don't like the books.

i think what Earnur means is: after they met and had Luthien, what happened to them until the noldor came back to beleriand? if this is correct, then nothing much particually happened to them. i think they just lived out their lives, with the small community of Grey elves that they had.

I agree. Of course their story during this period could have been presented as another text such as Lay of the Children of Hurin but probably because it would not be so interesting Tolkien never took such a story into consideration.
He could have just as well, made more detailed story about the lives of the Hobbits during the wars with Angmar, but just as in the other case, the events did not seem important enough. Let's not forget, one lifetime is never enough time.

Of course. who wants to hear stories of the Grey elves reading, or sowing, or gardening, or whatever they do in their spare time.

I imagine them playing some board games from time to time. but not luck games, I doubt that...more like strategy board games...where you have to use your army to win...
or usually I guess the make poetry or songs

oh yeah, definately chess...
imagine when you live so long you probably end up being really good in chess...
but so are your opponents, so a match would not end very quickly, that's sure.

Eanur, are you hoping to find a Love Story somewhere like Aragorn's and Arwen's? You have to remember that Melian was a Maia and I for my part feel that it would not look very becoming to talk about the courtship of a minor Godess. You don't have courtship stories about Varda and Manwë or any of the other Valar, and the Maia are of the order right after them. For me it is more important what they achieved, then to know that they had a courtship.
I hope I am not offending anybody, if I did, please forgive me.
