Books of Lost Tales

I have recently finished reading the second part of this small collective and I must say that I was blown away. I know that they are just rough drafts of the Silmarillion stories but boy was I wowed by not only the change of tone and pace but how plausible it would have been had Tolkien used these instead of what we are accustomed to. I especially loved the new story of Tuor being more in depth in his adventures. Here you first hear of the great willow forests that Treebeard remembers so fondly in LotR TT. The story of Earendil is also changed but for good cause. If you are a fan of Tolkien than I highly recommend this read. Happy reading.

Those books are very interesting. They give some idea as to who was there in the legends from the very beginning, and who wasn't. Like, Feanor and his sons yes, but not his (half)brothers, and he wasn't even Finwe's son initially. Tinuviel and Beren, Turin and Tuor, Turgon, Meglin (Maeglin)... Even Huan and Glaurung as Glorund (and other name variations). But not a trace of Galadriel for example. And no Sauron, but the evil cat Tevildo instead. It is so funny that Beren (an Elf at that external point) is his kitchen slave - he really didn't get far enough in his quest for a Silmaril on his own (which remained the case in later versions). My favorite moment is this: when Tinuviel comes to Tevildo looking for Beren and announces herself, "a great crash was heard in the kitchen as a number of vessels of metal and earthenware let suddenly fall, but Tevildo snarled: 'There trippeth that fool Beren the Elf. Melko rid me of such folk' ".
