I am a 17 year old boy from Norway, and I've been a Tolkien fan for about two years now. Sadly, I discovered how fantastic Tolkien's world is _after_ watching the Lord of the Rings movies... I have read the LoTR 4 times since then, however...
But anyway, I've read The Silmarillion three times, the Unfinished Tales once, and The Hobbit countless times, and I'm hoping to get my hands on The History of Middle Earth volumes. I may not be as "experienced" with Tolkien's world as many other people here, but that's about to change!

Fingolfin is a very interesting character in The Silmarillion. I just read Chapter 9 and 10 in The Silmarillion for the fifth time; always as interesting as the last time, and even more so!
My favorite work of Tolkien and my favorite character is a very difficult question for me to answer. It's all so fantastic. But I'd have to go with The Lord of The Rings as well. As for character, Maedhros and Fingolfin have a special place in my heart. Can't decide which one!

I know what you mean about Fingolfin. I love his battle with Morgoth. And his support of Feanor always has me looking deep for the reasons he would lead his people across the great ice.
The Silmarillion is such a complicated book. And the way Eru created the world through music has always been a favorite.

The battle between Morgoth and Fingolfin has always been an inspiration to me. Fingolfin decided to encounter Morgoth for the last time, most likely knowing that he will probably not come out of it. He embraced his fate, took a chance, as we all have to do in life.
And yes, I have always wondered why he crossed the great ice as well. I have always assumed it was because he felt he could not turn back in shame, due to the Kinslaying. Plus, it seems to be that a great number of his people really wanted to cross over, of different reasons. Some still loved Fëanor, perhaps even Fingolfin did deep down. Galadriel, if I recall correctly, was one of Fingolfin's followers, and she yearned for a place of her own to rule. I guess they had crossed over the point of no return.

You have a fine grasp on the English, if I may say. As you navigate your way around the forums your going to find that the members here are very knowledgeable and helpful. I have been learning plenty from them myself and always look forward to a new perspective to freshen up the ongoing topics here. So jump in and have a good time.
As for Fingolfin and the Ice, I would add his little... let's say reaction to the burning at Losgar: 'Then Fingolfin seeing that Feanor had left him to perish in Araman or return in shame to Valinor was filled with bitterness; but he desired now as never before to come by some way to Middle-earth, and meet Feanor again.'
And not that anyone said otherwise, but in my opinion Galadriel also ultimately became one of the leaders at some point, thus her special ban after Morgoth fell.
Wow! Don't call yourself an unexperienced tolkien fan. I am a new tolkien fan too, but I have only read the LOTR one and a half times, the hobbit (which is my fav) four times, and the Silmarillion once. I am trying to find more tolkien books, but haven't heard of any suggestions. Do you have any?
Umm.. why is the book called The Silmarillion? From what I have read from your post it was the battle of War of Wrath where Sauron was second-in-command of the first Dark Lord, Morgoth and then in the end he was sucked into the void and someone's prediction was that he will return at the battle of Dagor Dagorath.
