Some may know me from different sites like The One or Minas Tirith. I've been a Hobbit Sherriff for some time..also known as Noldie, a take-off from the Noldor, the high elves..but changed into Hobbet form.
I can't begin to say in words that y'all are here. You've surprised the plague that massacred.. how many site? Dozens? Perhaps a hunderd.
How did this site survive after the plague? Meaning.. the last of the LOTR movies. As a HUGE fan of the books far before any movie... it is only the die-hard book lovers that remain?

Our membership base seems to be pretty broad and very open and affirming.

You bring up an interesting point about our survival. Some folks come and go or comeback and choose a new name and avatar but there is a core that just keeps on writing. This core is not exclusive ... just the opposite, There is an effort to make new folks comfortable and encouraged to participate. Almost all threads are open no matter how long ago a post was added ... feel free to open a thread if that is your interest ... you will find folks willing to share. Sometimes we meet folks who are drawn here because of the movies ... they are welcomed ... we treat the movies as a different art form and the books as another art form. So for the most part our threads are based on the books but movie focused folks are still welcome.
I too came to this Forum through the books. Read The Hobbit in high school as part of an class assignment. Immediately grabbed The Lord of The Rings and was hooked.
I still re-read The Hobbit, The Lord of The Rings, The Silmarillion, and lots of other Tolkien works in my collection at least once a year. There is still so much more for me to learn and The Tolkien Forums is one of the best teachers I have ever found.
We also share another piece in common. The use of Tolkien in our academic pursuits ... my PhD dissertation was based on the "Psychological Archetypes within the works of J.R.R. Tolkien". From there and for years before I found Tolkien as a fountain of academic resources in dozens of my classes.
My point is that you are most welcome.
I found your Hobbit Sherriff called Noldie a very interesting little twist. It made me smile and peeked my curiousity. You will find your creativity and scholarship get a friendly reception here.
Just as a side note who is your favorite Lord of The Rings character? And why?

I guess I'll answer here who may favorite character is. From the beginning I sure Frodo was the main character, only to my chagrin to find people believe the lead role was someone else, and of course, discovering that the Professor decided it was Sam. The every day guy.
So. Frodo is my sad, humble hero. I like Faramir very well. I may like Aragorn quite well and any hobbit of the 9 walkers..but I really did think that I saw through Frodo's eyes whenever he was in any scene. The only giveaway was that it was Sam that woke up to find Frodo already awake. That surprised me. And then of course, it was he that had the last line, and that is saying a lot. But even then, it was Frodo.
A PhD on archetypes of the Professor's writings? Wow. You were a lit major? I though it was I that was obsessed. I've worked with post graduate students and now I think I could have done the same had I thought of it. My first year English Literature class in college didn't like Tolkien. But he read it as an adult and he may have not liked fantasy at all. He read my papers aloud to the class, I think every time. And I KNEW my style had come directly from my favorite author. He is still my favorite to this day.
That instructor has had good fortune publishing his poetry. Joe Stroud. And I worked with a very intelligent man when I was the International Studies Exchange Specialist at the University of Washington, Seattle. He is equally prolific. His name is Michael Biggins, University of Washington.
I think now, perhaps, just perhaps, I could have written a similar dissertation had I enrolled at the University of Iowa instead of the University of California. But I lived in a very nice part of California and couldn't take to the idea of living in Iowa for years.
