Other authors of note (who do you like?)

Aside from our common interests in JRRT (from which my own fantasy backgrounds started with the Rankin/Bass movies when I was about 3), what other authors does everyone enjoy reading?

I'm entirely caught up in George R.R. Martin's Song Of Ice And Fire series, and am eagerly awaiting (the seemingly mythical) Dance With Dragons.  I've read the four published books in the series twice through, and I highly recommend the series to any avid fan of deep fantasy.  Some of the plot lines get a little on the adult side (disclaimer), but his stories are filled with rich characters, and unseen twists born of an intricacy that any fan of Tolkien would probably enjoy.

Another current favorite of mine is Scott Lynch, whose second book Red Seas Under Red Skies has just been released.  It follows up The Lies Of Locke Lamore (2006) in what I think is going to be a trilogy.  Imagine GRRM mixed with a couple shots of Raymond E. Feist thrown in the mix.  I don't think he's gotten much recognition (I had to special order my copy of RSURS at my local B&N), but as he makes a name for himself that is sure to change.

I just picked up Acacia  by David Anthony Durham.  It look good, but I haven't read any of his work (feedback anyone?), and that will be on the back burner until I finish Book Of Lost Tales.

Of course, anyone looking for a fun and quick read, look no further than David Gemmel.  His Rigante series (beginning with Sword In The Storm)is superb.

I don't read that much but JK Rowling is not bad (not a patch of JRR though). And the only book I actually remember reading which I read to the end was 'Of mice and Men' by John Steinback (sp?) which was pretty good.

I hope this thread can be brought back to life. It is very interesting and revealing in someones choice in other books.
I have enjoyed Rowlings books and have managed to collect all of Harry Potters tale.
Some books can really come alive when read aloud; Lord of The Rings and The Hobbit for instance. Harry Potter makes wonderful bedtime reading for children. (have to be careful to stop before the very gruesome or scary parts that can trigger nightmares) And it helps awaken the love of books.
There are several fantasy writers who create wonderful books aimed at younger readers; C.S. Lewis is a good example with his Narnia series. His trilogy Out of the Silent Planet -Pelandra - That Hideous Strength - is a nice introduction to science fiction.
I love science fiction; Heinlein, Asimov, Campbell, are just three who always gain a re-read status.
I cant think of anything I like more than a hot beverage, a deep soft chair, and an old friend like Tolkien.
Of course I read much more than fantasy or science fiction.
I also love historical fiction. Colleen McCullough has a series about the destruction of the Roman Republic and the rise of Empire - six or seven in that series. James Clavels series on Asia and the British incursion is fantastic - Shogun may be my favorite.
In my reading I also load up on biographies (from many different authors). I usually am reading 4 or 5 at a timetoday?
Albert Einstein, Undaunted Courage - The Lewis and Clark Journeys, Jungs Gods and Ego, Frontier Empire by Alan Eckhart about the French fur empire in America and its recruitment of cannibalistic Indian tribes to wipe out the British, and my seventh re-read of the Silmarillion.
Plus professional journals, textbooks, and dissertations.
I guess I read plenty. My wife and daughter tease me about being a bookworm only they twist it to bookbear.

Perhaps it would be quicker if you told us all the authors you don't like Olorin?

Paolini is OK, but way too Star Wars. Too much cheesy stuff in there with SW-like dialogues and ME-like creuatures.
Still, considering the age he wrote the stuff at, the kid was good.
