Hello from Parmastahir

Hello to all.  I'm new here but post in a good many other forums.  I am very pleased that I registered as I have already had replies to a thread that I started in the Fan-Art Forum.

I have been reading the LotR since 1972.  I collect Tolkien calendars, have some artwork from same by Ted Nasmith, know a good many fanatical book collectors, and have tons of fun meeting (if only virtually) fellow fanatics from around this small globe.

I very much look forward to conversing with a good many of you!

Away from The Green Hill Country,

Parmastahir

(My username was registered as Par and not Parmastahir.  The One will help me change it soon.)

Hello Parmastahir, I hope our forum is to your liking
I personally really think you have a very interesting collection, and I will help you enlarge it if I shall have the possibility.
Anyway, should the Green Hill country mean Pinnath Gelin? If so, I expect the best kingdom would be Gondor.

Welcome Parmastahir, I hope you enjoy Tolkien Forums.
I also really enjoyed viewing your collection, I have started quite a collection of Tolkien art myself.
As I come from New Zealand I may be able to help you with finding the Unspoiled Earth Calender. Try our online auction site (its the New Zealand version of Ebay), www.trademe.co.nz.
Anyway look foward to seeing you in the forums.

Thank you to Brooke33:  I have discovered and bookmarked Trademe.co.nz.  I search the site at least once/week.  If you should happen upon one at a garage sale or used book store, please purchase it and let me know (either here or via the email link on my website).  I would certainly reimburse all of your costs.

Thank you to The Might:  Actually, The Green Hill Country is the area around and east of Tuckborough in the West Farthing of The Shire.  I'm uncertain which kingdom that would be as I have NO idea how to sign up for one.  Advice on this matter (from Mouth of Sauron or others) would be much appreciated!

And thank you all for your compliments on my collection and website!

Away from The Green Hill Country,

Parmastahir

(which is elvish parma[book]asta[month]hir[to find] literally "book of months finder" figuratively "calendar collector" - "You are a hasty lot.  Next you'll be telling me your real name!")

Its very simple. Simply see this page - Ranking Kingdoms - see what Kingdom you like, then scroll down to where it says 'Select your Kingdom' and then fill out the form and press submit. Then it will be sent into the Void and your prayer will be answered shortly.

Interesting...I had forgotten that this region existed in the Shire

And I guess we are hasty...but haste isn't always bad
Also I hope you'll find a kingdom to your liking.

Parmastahir, pitty we didn't have you arround earlier. If you wonder why I say this I suggest you start observing yourself as a first step and see how nicely you're handing the harmony of the books with reality in order to mentain a balance in your life, as we all should do. Next step, wait for my nest coming as it might be sooner than you'd expect, at first light in the third day.
Welcome mellon, mae govannen! May Eru bless the day of our meeting.
Regarding the kingdoms, as you have been already wisely advised by Glorfindel , I suggest again not to rush into making a decision as you might easily observ that you have at your disposal some choises that you should take into consideration. Weather the golden forest of Lorien, the darken caves of Moria, the mighty city of Minas or the deserted lands of Mordor, I know you'll make the right decision.
I wish you good luck enlarging your collection and Tolkien knowledge. By first I can't help unfortunately, by second I strongly reccomand to stay with us on TF since is basicly offering everything a Tolkien fan can wish.
Be most welcomed to ask and explore.
TF is offering what is most pure and beautiful in Tolkien's work.

Thanks to The Might for the link to the Ranking Kingdoms page.  I, of course, chose Hobbits of the Shire.

And thanks to Rumil for your good wishes on my collection.  I ordered two more today (recent commercial issues that I did not have a copy of) and am working on some rare ones.  You need not worry about me being a stranger here.  I have already found these forums to be very active and friendly.  Frankly, you could not really keep me away!

Thanks all for your kind welcomes.

Away from The Green Hill Country,

Parmastahir

(The Green Hill Country also denotes the fact that I live in Vermont, The Green Mountain State.  I got my closing by paraphrasing the closing that Gary Hunnewell uses on his emails whom he got by paraphrasing the late Bernie Zuber of the old Tolkien Fellowship.  I feel like Sam and Frodo with the Phial of Galadriel - part of some great tale that is still going on!)

Well, I couldn't agree more
Hobbits collect maps or family trees so calendars would definitely be important for them
Imagine how important it is to know all the birthdays of your relatives up to far away aunts. Forgetting to buy a present could mean war in the Shire !
On the other hand I would expect Elves or Dwarves would see little use in having calendars. Perhaps Men would use them too, but probably also only for remembering important events.
However for Hobbits they would be of vital importance.

Welcome, Parmastahir! You seem to be joining every Tolkien website I'm on — Minas Tirith, Planet Tolkien, Tolkien Forums, etc. — it's a bit of déjà vu to be seeing you around.

And Vermont is absolutely lovely; we have a house up in Orleans county near the Canadian border, but haven't been up there for a few years from lack of snow for snowmobiling. :)

Hello Tyrhael -

Yes, I do get around.  The first boards that I ever found were the old Tolkien Collector forums.  These have since been resurrected by Jeremy Edmonds.  I found them shortly after I "discovered" that I did not have all of the US calendar issues from Ballantine.  I learned from the Master (Fangorn) about the many issues from the various Tolkien societies around the world.  It was he that helped me collect many of the rare issues that I have.  This led me to seek out other forums to post in and obtain information about the calendars.  It has certainly proved a worthwhile endeavor.

Can't speak for Orleans County (I'm down in Rutland County), but we do have a little snow on the ground.  Have seen a few snowmobile trailers on the road.  But all in all, a rather warm winter and snow has been scarce.

Thanks to Bilbo Baggins for his welcome.  I have no reason not to be polite and very many for being so (not the least of which is my mama raised me to be polite).  As to the knowledge, I can not pretend to be a loremaster.  I have some detailed information on a particular subject and a general knowledge of the LotR but a much less detailed grasp of the Silmarillion.  It is fun in any case.

And my response to The Might should have read "Frankly, you could NOT really keep me away!"  Perhaps that's a suggestion for the website: one should (as in other forums) be able to edit one's own posts.

Thanks all!

Away from The Green Hill Country,

Parmastahir

To Tyrhael - Time to go up to Orleans County! That Nor'easter dropped over 20" in our area. The snow this winter has been like burrahobbits and dwarves - none and lots!

To Galadriel - Thanks very much for your welcome! These are boards both active and friendly.

Was reviewing my profile and noted that I could upload an image to use as my avatar. My avatar is a photo of the wall in my suite at college done in the fall semester of 1973. We returned to campus and heard of The Professor's passing. Someone had the idea to put the Barbara Remington triptych (which composed the three covers of the Ballantine paperbacks at that time) on the wall. So we chipped in $5 each, bought a bunch of surplus paint "on the cheap", had a couple of art students sketch the outline, and away we went. It quickly became a campus event. Students would stop in all of the time just to paint a little. I still have my dogeared paperbacks from then with dabs of paint on them; I wouldn't trade them for first editions!  We had a great party upon its completion, and I got to fill in the last part - the frog in the tree on the cover of the FotR - in dayglo paint. Being a fanatic even then, I also wrote out an inscription in Tengwar. It was great (in every sense of the word).

1973?
Wow...that's a long time ago, back then I was probably still hanging out with Mandos or something

Anyway, great avatar, I think it looks awesome. I could recognize Mount Doom, and maybe the birds left of it are the eagles that come to rescue Frodo and Sam
Great idea!
Though I must admit that in the presence of people who are fans for so long I feel like a complete newb

Actually, 1973 doesn't seem that long ago to me. Don't feel like a newb. I post on many forums and therefore know many true experts. I'm just into this for the fun!

You can check out the Remington poster here:

http://ringlord.com/people/walrus/lotr/wilderness-poster.html

The "birds" are actually the Black Riders. You can see one that is in water (lost at the Ford of the Bruinen) and others rising into the air (becoming the Fell Riders of the Air). It's a very nice piece of fantasy art. The covers of the first Ballantine paperback sets from October 1965 through the early 70s were made up this artwork. You can see those early sets here:

Another matter that matches my choice of Hobbits of the Shire as my ranking kingdom: they created a Shire reckoning calendar which works quite well. All of the months are 30 days long. There are some yule and lithe days to round it all out (and to celebrate in). Of the hundreds of calendars that I have been able to catalog, only one is a true SR issue. A pint o' 1420 to the first that determines which one that is and posts the answer here!

Parmastahir
