TOLKIEN CALENDARS

Hello The Might -

I keep searching for the Ediciones Minotauro issues from 1998, 2002, 2003, and 2005. I won an eBay auction of the 2005 calendar from a Spanish seller years ago for 2 or 3 euros. But then he was going to charge me 35 euros to ship it over! Commonly, air mail is 10 - 15 euros. We disagreed over that and I never got that calendar. Ah well, another will come along! After my success over the last week, it's hard to feel bad about the Minotauro ones. I'll be persistent and patient.

Thanks!

Away from The Green Hill Country,

Parmastahir

Hi Olorin -

Thanks very much! Compared to the various book collectors and their websites, I am a big fish in a small pond. Or as Gandalf said to Bilbo, "You are only quite a little fellow in a wide world after all." The best part is that it (my collecting) has put me in contact with a number of very knowledgeable Tolkienistas from all over the globe. These people have been generous with their time and information, and I have tried to "pay it forward". At the very least, you can see a good number of their names on the "thank you" list on my website.

Will soon post a new Calendar of the Month feature. Can't believe May is almost gone!

Thanks for your posts. As a maiar/moderator, your posts are most welcome!

Away from The Green Hill Country,

Parmastahir

TOLKIEN CALENDARS

Thank you Parmastahir. those are nice to look at. DO you have any with Shire reckoning? With the real Hobbit names for days? Like today is Forelithe 17 in the Shire calendar.

Shire Reckoning Calendars

Hello Arwen -

A few of the calendars listed are true Shire Reckoning calendars.  Several of the Middle-earth Fellowship calendars are SR calendars.  A few of the issues from the Polish Tolkien Society are Gregorian calendars but also have the dates listed according to the reckonings of Gondor, Imladris, the Dwarves, and The Shire. Thanks for your question!

RE: TOLKIEN CALENDARS

Parmastahir, we have a region here in Texas called "Green Hill Country" Is that where you are from?  Where could I got one of those Polish Tolkien Society calendars that have everything ? Would I have to write them for one of those?

Green Hill Country

Hi Arwen -

Actually, I live in Vermont "The Green Mountain State".  "The Green Hill Country" is a double entendre:  both a Vermont and a Tolkien reference in one. Actually, my closing has evolved from the closing used by Sumner Hunnewell (aka Hildifons - the gentleman who catalogued the Marquette University Tolkien collection). He closes with "Away from Tuckborough".  As he explained to me:

'I started "In Tuckborough" when I was in Maine because Bernie Zuber started using "In Fellowship" (he ran the Tolkien Fellowships) and then everyone & their brother used "In Fellowship"...so I started to use "In Tuckborough".  When I moved away from Maine, I started to use "Away From Tuckborough".'

Bernie passed away a few years ago.  His collection of Tolkienalia is being sold on eBay by "greenbuck" (lots of rare publications from various Tolkien groups).  When I use that closing, I sometimes feel like Sam and Frodo talking about the light of the Silmarils in the Phial of Galadriel and how the great tales never end.

As to getting one of the calendars that have everything, I assume you mean one of the issues from the Polish Tolkien Society (Parmadili).  I don't wish to discourage you, but they only published about 100 of them each year. As they are now close to 10 years old, it is hard to find them . . . and you would have to get them from a Polish seller. As I collect these calendars, I have been persistent and lucky to find them. According to the calendar section of Galadhorn's website, it is possible to order one from him.  (Galadhorn is a Tolkien username for Ryszard Derzinski who very active in the PTS and edited many of their calendars.)  You could try the following link.  However, I have never gotten an email back from him (only email failure notices).

http://www.elvish.org/gwaith/shop.htm#periodicals

The only other ways are to use Google and search for "Tolkien kalendarz" (the Polish spelling of calendar). But all of those websites will be in Polish.  There is an e-calendar listed there that is free and downloadable.

Occasionally, a PTS issue will pop up on eBay. You could set up automatic searches on eBay that will send you an email when it finds one matching your search criteria.

Good luck!  I hope this helps rather than frustrates you.  It is possible to find these.  You just need a goodly amount of patience and persistence.

Away from The Green Hill Country,

Parmastahir

TOLKIEN CALENDARS

Added a new calendar to the website this week. An 18 month, 2007 - 2008 calendar from the Middle-earth fellowship. The only made 25 for members. Made an entry for it but need to get a photo of it. Am hoping to add some from a small European society soon! Hope you enjoy it!

Thank you for sharing that with me mellon nín. I really appreciate that. Also, it is not discouraging to me. I just had our monthly dinner meeting with my Tolkien Roundtable called The Inklings. We are having a project doing on right now. We are going to Print and Bind the Kalevala. 't will expensive, but it will be written on archival quaility paper with archival type ink to last forever. I will try and look for the calendar spelled in polish

You are very welcome for any small service that I have provided. If you can not find a copy of one of those calendars, I could photograph one of mine and email high resolution photos of the pages to you. Then you could see the calendar and how it's laid out and even print it out from those photos if you wished. If you would like to do that, just send an email to me via my website (taking that project off-line, so to speak).

I very much like hearing of groups and projects such as yours. Thanks for sharing!

Added a new calendar to my website this week. It is a variant of the 2006 Polish TS issue. They printed a very few of them on yellow paper before the "regular" issue came out on white paper. Was fortunate to obtain a copy of it for my collection. You may view the 236 different Tolkien calendars that I have been able to catalog at:

www.angelfire.com/tn3/tolkiencalendars

Hope you enjoy them. Thanks for dropping in!

Dear Parmastahir, I looked for several hours, but was not able to get one of those Polish calendars. I would like to take you up on your offer. How much would it cost?

Hi Arwen -

The Calendar of the Month for February was the 2002 Middle-earth Fellowship Shire Reckoning calendar.  I can email all of the photos of that calendar to you.  Just contact me via the email link on my website.  I will attach them to emails and send them to you.  As these are high-resolution (2400x1800), the file sizes are about 1.5 Mb each, so I would send them one at a time.  There is no charge for this.  It's just "a bunch" of emails.

You could also do a free download the .pdf file of the Elvish Linguistic calendar from Ryszard Derdzinski that you will find here:

http://www.elvish.org/gwaith/shop.htm#periodicals

It has calendars in the reckonings of Imladris, Gondor, and The Shire (per Appendix D of the RotK).

Hope to hear from you soon!

CotM for July

Hello to All -

Hope your summer is going well (and, for those here in the US, that you have a most enjoyable 4th of July).

Put a new calendar of the month up for July.  It is a true rarity (only three copies of it were printed).

Away from The Green Hill Country,

You can find them at www.angelfire.com/tn3/tolkiencalendars.

Received and created a listing for a 2007 Hobbit calendar from Australia this week. It is an excellent calendar from Colin Williams. The illustrations are great, the production quality is top notch, and it's simply different from all of the others that I have collected. Prior to finding it on eBay, had not heard of this one or its illustrator. Could not find a website or email address for him, so have written to him to find out more about his work. Has anyone here any information on Colin Williams (Annandale, NSW, Australia)? Thanks!

What's great is that it is in the original fanzine (Angerthas 9 issue of Norge Tolkien Forening). There is only one other issue like that: the 1969 Tim Kirk calendar. It was issued with the December 1968 (Meretricious) issue of Shangri l'Affaires (fanzine of the Los Angeles Science Fiction Society). I have a copy of the fanzine but not the calendar.

Thanks for your post!

Discovered (and collected) a previously undiscovered Tolkien calendar. It is a variant of the 1977 calendar published in New Zealand. Check it out at:

As it winds down, hope everyone's summer was great.

Posted the Calendar of the Month for September this morning. It is a German language variant of a particular favorite of mine. Thus, it is somewhat uncommon.

Also added a German language Shire Reckoning calendar to the catalog. It is available in .pdf format from the creator's website.

Both of these may interest The Might.

Hope you enjoy them!

Thank you very much for the link, the interactive maps are great and I think all fans, no matter if they understand German or not would take pleasure in looking at the interactive map showing how the different kingdoms changed in time in M-e, really interesting.

Though the reason why I went to it was to download that calendar...strangely however I can't seem to find it. Either it no longer is available, which means you must also edit your site, or I have not noticed it.

EDIT: I've found it, and it really is nice, just downloaded it, and will print it out tomorrow or so and hang it on the wall. Thanks a lot again Parmastahir.

Hello TM -

You are certainly more than welcome for the link. I (as you) had a small amount of trouble finding it on the website (it's hidden in plain sight, so to speak). I tried to contact the website owner via the email link there but got a delivery failure. As he's in Germany, would you give it a try some time and see if you can get to him? I'd like to ask him some questions about the calendar (his inspiration, etc) if I could get to him. And I'd like to confirm that it was created by Bernd Huber (as that was the name on the email address, that's what I listed the calendar under on my site).

Made some fantastic acquisitions recently. Posted the complete collection of calendars (eighteen) from Colin Williams, a recently discovered illustrator, and a newly discovered variant of the 1974 A&U issue from New Zealand on my website today:

www.angelfire.com/tn3/tolkiencalendars

Hope you enjoy them. As always, interested in your comments and visits.

And thank you very much, The Might, for contacting Hr. Huber. I have not heard from him. Would it be possible for you to send his email address to me via my website so that I may contact him directly? Thanks again for your unwavering support!!

Happy Autumn to all!

Hope you don't mind answering this...but I am really curious how you were able to purchase something this rare?

Oh, and I'm not sure what you mean about me sending the mail address...I thought you alrealy had it ?!?!; I probably am confused by something easy to understand again

Hello TM -

I wrote to Mr. Williams and one thing led to another. He had a very few extra copies left over from each year and put together a set for me.

As to the email address for Mr. Huber: I tried the email address that is found on his website but received a delivery failure from my email service. So I simply assumed that it was not a working address. If you simply wrote to him via that address, please let me know and I'll try it again. Otherwise, could I impose upon you to send my email address (from my website) to him and ask him to write to me?

Thanks again for your support! I certainly appreciate it.

Oh yes I forgot, I think I found a delivery failure notice as well, didn't notice it was from Mr. Huber's mail, but I think this is the case.
Guess his mail address doesn't work after all.

btw, I tried to search for those Ediciones Minotauro calendars from Spain, turns out theres was an auction for one sometime in March, but nobody bought it.

Unfortunately no other site seemed to have it.
The only advice I could give you is try write to the Sociedad Tolkien Espanola at their mail address:

sociedad@sociedadtolkien.org

Maybe they can help you with that.

Ediciones Minotauro Calendarios

Hello The Might -

Thanks for trying.  To paraphrase Pippin's conversation with Denethor: "Though you tried and failed, my gratitude is none the less."

I discovered the 2003 Ediciones Minotauro (still in the original shrinkwrap) in an on-line bookseller's inventory and got it.  And the 2008 is now out. So I'm trying to find a copy of it.  One just sold on eBay so I'll keep watching there.

And the first of the 2008 calendars are out - which you can also find on my website.  Hope you enjoy them.  As always, would love to hear your comments and/or questions!

NEW Tolkien Calendar

I have collected a LOT of Tolkien calendars. Now a first for me. I have been working with Ted Nasmith and Jef Murray to create a calendar for Heren Istarion (The Northeast Tolkien Society). Anthony and Jessie, the cochairs of NETS, are having difficulty keeping the Society solvent (without dipping further into their own pockets!) As they have done so much for Tolkien fans (including organizing the '08 MythCon in Connecticut next year) and as I have been wanting to create a calendar, I have taken the responsibility to create this one. All proceeds will benefit HI. Ted and Jef have contributed some amazing illustrations (some of them previously unpublished!) I am working with my daughter (a graphic designer) to lay out the calendar. It will be in the Shire Reckoning format with Gregorian dates, moon phases, and important dates in Middle-earth added. You can check out its cover by Jef (and support HI should you order one) at:

www.herenistarion.org

Thanks!

Away from The Green Hill Country,

Parmastahir

p.s. - I am hoping that a plug for this calendar does not offend anyone or run afoul of any forum rules. It is for a good and completely non-commercial cause. (I will certainly abide by any decisions that a moderator may make!)
